Preview can't open JPEG (.jpg) files

Prior to upgrading to OS X Yosemite, I was able to scan pictures on my scanner to JPEGs (file extension .jpg) and open them with Preview. Now Preview says "The file xxxx_xxxx.jpg could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." How do I fix this? Thanks. Mid 2009 13'' MacBook Pro, OS X 10.10, Preview v8.0. My Scanner says its software is current.

right click the jpeg and look at what your "Open with..." options are, if it's part of your scanner suite software it's possible the software is not compatible with Yosemite regardless of how new it is.

the default should be Preview

Also if your scanner is holding the files internally, on a flash drive or on a network server it's possible the mac is trying to open the resource file and not the data file so even though it ends with .jpg it's not a .jpg file inside.

My "Open with" option is set to Preview. My scanner sends the file directly to my MacBook and Finder opens when it is received. The file is sent from my scanner to my MacBook over my LAN created by my Apple Airport Extreme.

When I tell the scanner to send me a TIFF file everything works, but the TIFF files are huge. So I want to get the JPEGs working again.

can you scan from another app, like Preview? (File>Import from Scanner) then try to save the output as JPEG?

can you open other jpeg's on that mac and are the ones from the scanner the only ones that seem affected? If so that might point to software incompatibility with Yosemite.

can you try a smaller file type like PNG which gives you lossless quality but the file size compatible with jpeg? Jpegs ALWAYS compress so even at 100% you loose quality of image. PNG does not compress, the quality is just as good as TIFF but it makes very small files like JPEG.

JimmyCMPIT, thanks for all the help. I've discovered that I can use Preview to scan a JPEG using the File>Import from scanner option (although mine actually says the name of my scanner in the File drop down menu). Using this option is less than ideal because it requires a few more clicks than the scanner's software did. Is there anything I can do to make the scanner software working with OS X Yosemite or do I have to wait for a software update? The last software update for my scanner software actually came after OS X Yosemite release date. Thanks!

I am receiving the same message but it is for pictures I have copied from my Macbook Air to my NAS. After the last OS X update all of my MACs give the same error message when I attempt to open any picture (Mac Mini late 2014 and Macbook Air mid 2012).

I can drag and drop the pictures onto the desktop and then Preview will open it.....there are pictures on the NAS from the past 15 years and all are in the same boat after the last update.
