MBP audio no longer plays from my speakers...Optical light stays on
Ok, so the other day, I'm using my MBP in the studio, and patch a cord out of the line out jack to listen through the monitors. Ever since then, I no longer have audio through my internal speakers, and the optical light is on all the time. No volume control, and the audio page in sound prefs only shows the digital option. Not something I'm going to just deal with. They WILL make this good. BTW, this is my first post, but I've been reading nightmare stories from all of you out there, and someone at Apple needs to step up to the plate and get these issues resolved. These units are too expensive for us to have to put up with this shoddy example of workmanship. If these were cars, they would have been recalled. Are they not making enough money on the Ipod stuff?
APPLE, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, GET OFF YOUR @!#$@$ AND DO SOMETHING!

hey i tried to poke around with a metal pin, but i keep pushing it in, but there is no difference, light still on and sound still off.... and am well up for listening to some new tunes that just downloaded, but no "it just works" they tell me...
I try this with a toothpick and it did work, I think that in this case some dirt got trap in the sensor, after it was reseted once I plug the headphones and snap it out again the optical out went on, then I try to reseted for several times and finally after 6 times it worked fine.
Thanks all for the tip. I had the same problem and tried the toothpick just now, and it worked after only a few nerve-wracking pokes. A
very gentle poke was the one that did it; I just had to find the exact right spot, I think near the back wall of the jack, and like you say, perhaps 6 or 7 o'clock. The red light started flickering, and the internal speakers flashed in and out of my Sound system preference panel. After another couple very gentle pokes, the light stayed off.
Again, no need for anything but the faintest pressure, and some patience.
Tootpick thing didn't work for me. I just kept putting the headphone jack in and out and eventually the light went away. Apple really needs to do something about this problem. I like apple but the problems are starting to mount and I just might go back to PC.
I have read all of the posts in this thread, and could not agree more with most of you. I called apple care, and was told nothing because my 90 support agreement was up.
Apple, you're telling me that after buying a $1400 laptop, your customer care rep can't tell me anything but "bring it to a service location"? That is bad business.
I had to come to a message board to be told to stick something in there and jiggle it around. Sadly, it didn't do the trick. I am just hoping that whatever service required won't take days.
Fix your audio ports apple, this shouldn't be happening to this many people (although that fact that is is comforts me some admittedly).
I just hit the same problem. I jiggled my headphone jack around toward the bottom of the port and the speakers started working again just like iMagic. Steve Jobs should be meaner to his third world proletariat labour if they're going to make bad headphone ports like this. Unacceptable!
Just a quick note to say thanks to you guys for this solution! It worked a treat with a little fiddling around. Shame about the lack of build quality eh.
I just experienced the same problem. Never seen or heard of this before.
Didn't have a toothpick so I inserted and removed my speaker plug several times. The first few it flashed red after I removed the plug. Finally I removed the plug and the red light remained off. The internal speakers work again.
I'm rather confused at the moment. My headphones recently stopped working for no apparent reason, so I started using a new pair and they're fine. However, whenever I remove them a the red light flashes once and then goes away. It's never done that before and I'm concerned that the problem might get worse until I'm faced with some of the issues posted here.
First, and foremost - GO TO A BLOODY APPLE STORE, EVERYONE WHO IS NOT ADVANTAGOUES!!! Especially if you have a warranty.
Frilly toothpicks - you like them, I do! My wifes Mac Book (white) did the same thing one day: red light out of audio jack and only the headphones would work.
So, took a frilly, umbrella toothpick and "tapped the metallic sensors inside - pulling the toothpick out after each gentle push. Finally, pushed the tooth pick fully in GENTLY for a few seconds and removed.
Red light flickered and vanished.
