2nd gen iPod shuffle not recognized by Yosemite or iTunes 12

I just connected my iPod shuffle (2nd gen) into my macbook for the first time since the update to Yosemite and iTunes 12. Right when it's plugged in the iPod only blinks orange three times, then doesn't blink or light up again. It doesn't show up in iTunes or in the finder. It also doesn't show up in the USB devices on the system report. It charges when plugged into a wall-USB charger, but isn't recognized at all by the mac. Also, I'm using the factory mini-dock that came with it, which I believe to be in perfect working condition.

I know they're cheap, but I've ran thousands of miles with it and I've grown attached to it. I've spent more time with it than most of my friends...

I'm afraid the new ones might not be as amazing as this one.

Although it is still useable, I really need some fresh music on there as my runs are beginning to get boring.

It has always connected fine with no issue, which leads me to believe its a Yosemite issue (maybe apple is trying to weed out the old iPod fossils still roaming about). But, it may just be a coincidence that it stopped working just after the update. ...Maybe my iPod is just toast. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Based on the light's behavior, it seems like things are working properly. The shuffle's light blinks initially because iTunes mounts the shuffle's disk for the initial sync. Then, the shuffle's disk is unmounted after syncing completes, and the light goes solid. iTunes opens when you connect the shuffle, if it is set to open iTunes when connecting (which is the default setting).

Are you sure you are looking at the right place on the iTunes window? In iTunes 12, iPods appear as a small "device button." It is on the horizontal bar that goes across the iTunes window (near the top). The button's icon looks like the connected device. Click the button to see the iPod's "management" screen.

Kinda getting confusing, with all the different posters... 😉

For you, since the iPod is recognized by the system, but iTunes is having a problem, I suggested doing a test by creating a new user account (reply on Jan 3, 2015 3:05 PM). Did you try that test? The result will help narrow down the cause. If the problem recurs in a brand new user account (make sure you are logged out of your usual account) using a fresh iTunes library, that means the cause is at the system level. For example, it might be related to the overall iTunes app, or a third-party system extension that runs at startup, or a problem with overall system installation, or perhaps a hardware problem on the shuffle. If the problem goes away in the new user account, that means the cause is at the user level. For example, it might be a problem with your current iTunes library, or a third-party process that runs when you log in to the account, or a corrupted user preference setting (something only in that user account).

Either way, it will help narrow down possible causes, so that you aren't trying random things. FYI - This is a good technique for many trouble-shooting situations, when the cause is not obvious. I have a user account named Test User on my Mac.

Also, since the shuffle is seen by the system, you can try this (not related to the above). Connect the shuffle. With iTunes NOT running, run Disk Utility. Select the shuffle in the Disk Utility sidebar. Select the shuffle (device), not the shuffle's "disk" indented below (if shown). Go to the Erase tab. Select MS-DOS (FAT) for Format. Name does not matter. Click Erase and confirm.

After the Erase reformats the shuffle's storage, run iTunes. iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore. If so, this would be a good thing, since it is now recognized properly. Have iTunes do the Restore (to re-install the shuffle's onboard software), and hope it is now recognized properly when connected normally.

So, it's probably something at the system level. It could be something, like a third-party system extension that runs at startup, that is installed on the non-working Mac and not installed on the other (working) Mac. It could be a problem with overall system or iTunes application. It could be a hardware-related, maybe not on the shuffle, but on the Mac; just to rule them out, do these two "general" trouble-shooting steps

If the exact cause is difficult to determine, and you have an external drive (that can be erased), you can install a "clean" Yosemite system there and start up from it. A USB flash drive may work for this purpose, if it's fast enough and at least 16GB (32 or more is better). For testing Yosemite beta, I used a 64GB SDXC card in my Mac mini's high-speed SD card slot (that works surprisingly well as a startup disk). The "test disk" (whatever it is) needs to be set up using Disk Utility, on the Partition tab, so that its Partition Map Scheme is GUID Partition Table (Options button), and its Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then, run the Yosemite installer and target that disk for the installation.

After starting up, set up your user account and apply all Apple updates. This is a "clean" system; run iTunes and connect the shuffle to see if the problem still recurs.

I managed to get my ipod shuffle (3rd gen) working again.

My problem was that because I ran the Yosemite Beta on this mac, it was still set to install prerelease updates (under Settings -> App Store), and as a result it had installed the current prerelease of 10.10.2. I switched this off, and reinstalled Yosemite (simply installed the current 10.10.1 release of Yosemite available in the App Store) and my shuffle started working again.

I discovered this in this article: Update 10.10.2 and iPod shuffle recognition

Hmmm... That's interesting, because the latest official release currently is only 10.10.1, not 10.10.2. So, that probably means your system is still getting the latest "beta" (pre-release) updates that are meant for ongoing testers and developers, not the general public. You probably had an earlier (beta) version of 10.10.2 installed previously, which had this problem (bug) with iTunes syncing iPods, and this latest (still beta) version of 10.10.2 fixed those issues.

Most users' systems, including my primary OS X system are still at the officially released 10.10.1, which does not have these iPod issues.

This may cause you problems repeatedly, because after the official 10.10.2 version is released, you'll get the pre-release 10.10.3 updates, which may have bugs that affect you. And you will also get these system updates much more frequently than "normal" users, which is inconvenient.

Info for pre-release testers says the following:

How to Hide Pre-Release Updates

To stop receiving new seed builds in the Mac App Store on your machine, follow the steps below.

1. Launch Applications > System Preferences > App Store

2. Look for the option "Your computer is set to receive pre-release Software Update seeds", and click the "Change.." button

3. Click on "Do Not Show Pre-release Updates"

Hopefully, that will stop your system from getting Apple's software updates that are meant for beta-testing, not general use. And going forward, if there is another "open beta" invitation (like before the next major release after Yosemite if Apple does it again), you should install the beta version of OS X on a separate volume (not over your primary system that you use day-to-day). It's a "beta-test" version for a reason... 😉

iPod Shuffle A1204 1GB 2nd Generation is not turning on but its charging

I have an iPod A1204 Model, 2nd Generation having 1 GB Storage.

I have never used it for a long time. Yesterday, I tried to use it. I connected it to iTunes. I have its original USB Dock.

When Connected to Power Adapter its show Full Charged (Green Light)

When Connected to Laptop its charging. iTunes also detects it and shows contents.

I have updated version, Restored it. Allowed it to charge for many hours surely more than 5 hrs.

But when I removed it from dock and tried to switch it on it doesn't switching on.

I tried all like holding for 3 seconds, resetting but nothing works.

When I connect it to USB 3.0 it either shows fully charged or doesn't charge but get connected to iTunes and when connected to USB 2.0 it shows chargrng.

But, It doesn't get switched on.

Please suggest me solution.

The most likely cause is a battery that does not hold its charge. If you leave a lithium battery completely discharged for a long time, it can become unable to hold a charge. It may show that its charging when connected, but when you disconnected it from power, the battery is not holding its charge. Therefore, when you try to turn it on when disconnected, it is dead.
