Have iMac, Yosimite OS 10.10, processor 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5, memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, internal HD - 1TB, Time machine id 1 TB external La Cie. I see that I have 260 GB left on Time Machine disk, on Time Machine window. Additional message, "Needs 266.46 GB for back up, thus "backup failed". What is my next step? Thank you very much indeed!

Looked at your first suggestion; good info to have. Second one not applicable, I believe, to my Yosemite OS10.10. However, later in the evening after rebooting, successful backup; also had one today 08N0v2014 - 1:04 PM. Curious why the issue? Have one TM disc connected via firewire, a 1TB. CPU has iTB internal HD. Thank you!
You are welcome. You really should have 2 backups. Hard drives do fail.

I just rebooted my CPU, still getting back ups on Time Machine. OS 10.10 Yosemite
I also am not sure I follow the solution. I have just done the OS upgrade, but now it will no longer delete my time machine backups and says I don't have enough space. How do I re-trigger the automatic back-up deletion?
I removed some excess copies of files, securely trashed them, rebooted CPU, no more problems with Time Machine. Have successful backups as of this date. Zeroes and ones are with me!
