Safari (webkit) error- Stream 0x0... is sending an event before being opened

I am getting this error continually on my office iMac (now running Yosemite) but I don't have this problem on my MacBook (also Yosemite). I only seem to see it for one local password-protected web area (https:// site):

com.apple.WebKit.Networking[282]: Stream 0x0... is sending an event before being opened

When I try to access or log into this web page, I get a stream of these messages in the console (many per second). The messages stop when I stop trying to load the web page.

I saw the same problem on Mavericks, so it is not isolated to Yosemite, but curiously seems to afflict only my Office iMac. I can access the web page in question using Chrome.

When I log in using another account on the same iMac, I can successfully enter the site (after putting in the password etc). This would seem to indicate that the problem is a user preferences file, but I cannot figure out which one(s) to delete to fix this. Suggestions much appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I have the same issue, in response to the above I have tried both using a guest account and SafeBoot.

It's worth noting that the Guest Account was able to access the site in question without any issue, however SafeBoot using my AD Account did not work.

I have collected the following logging:

Clearly it's something user/local specific, I've tried logging into my AD Account on another Mac and it worked fine. I've deleted ~/Library/Safari which made no difference. Additionally I've cleared out everything as per the first response to this thread.

Anybody have any further ideas toward this?

Thanks

Stockyplayer,

i have same issue as described above. Issue started when Mavericks came out. I am on Yosemite now and still have problem. We do have Bluecoat. And I connect to our company secure servers (Windows Server 2008/2012) using SMB ( which is now SMB2 i understand). When i connect to our server using Finder to access and modify webpages stored there, i cannot login to the www.webpage using Safari....it just sits there.....but the system logs are quickly logging this message "com.apple.WebKit. Stream 0x0 is sending an event before being opened" about 130 times per second. And the Windows servers are also logging a different message and filling up the logs there until i stop Safari. I can open Firefox and open the webpage just fine. No excessive logging. Or i can kill my Finder connection to the Server and it will load fine with the Safari browser.

I'm having the same issue with a (Server 2012 R2, IIS 8) web server I just built. It's just a hunch but it seems to be due to a bug with Safari's initial response to a 401 unauthorized response from the web server. Instead of popping up a login dialog (or using cached credentials), it just hangs there repeating the aforementioned error into the console until you close the page. I tried manually adding a keychain entry that should cause Safari to auto-fill my credentials, with no luck. I also tried disabling password auto-fill, which didn't help either. I'm not even on an AD bound Mac, but I am using the same username as my AD credentials for simplicity's sake. Strangely, other 401-response style sites in our domain work perfectly in Safari, including SharePoint sites. Mobile Safari works fine, though of course iOS devices don't auto-fill 401-response logins and are logged in as root. The IIS 8 settings that seem to trigger this semi-reliably are:

- Anonymous Authentication disabled

- Windows Authentication Enabled

-or-

- Anonymous and Windows authentication enabled

- Some restriction placed on authorization rules

Basic/forms authentication presents no problems. I've also confirmed this issue in IIS 7.5 sites using similar settings, so it's definitely a bug in Safari.

Replying to my own post because I have more information.

This seems to be caused by OS X/Safari (incorrectly) re-using existing cached credentials from SMB/CIFS shares when a site hosted by IIS is using Windows Authentication with the Negotiate provider enabled. If you have a SMB/CIFS share mounted and attempt to visit an affected site, you trigger the error. Unmount the share, and the problem goes away (this is why logging out also makes the problem go away...until you map shares again or click on/activate an alias that maps a share).

Another workaround can be done if you have access to or can request a change to the web server. You have to adjust the authentication settings to work around the issue by removing Negotiate and leaving only NTLM negotiation. Doing this has no discernible effect on other browsers, which continue to log in normally.

On an IIS site displaying the issue:

  1. Open IIS Manager on the web server(s) in question
  2. Navigate to the application/folder that requires login using the tree on the left
  3. Click on the application/folder that requires a login
  4. Double-click Authentication under the IIS section in the middle
  5. Select Windows Authentication
  6. Click Providers... on the right
  7. Select Negotiate in the list and click Remove (make sure NTLM is still there...if not, add it back). Confirm. Click OK.

Tim, thanks for this.

This post has been helpful because we have been having this issue with Shoretel's communicator software. Unmounting the network drives allowed the communicator to work.

I am using the 10.10.3 beta and it looks like the webkit error is gone and everything is working. I have not touched anything on IIS either.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Safari (webkit) error- Stream 0x0... is sending an event before being opened
