Yahoo! mail stopped working with Yosemite

Ever since I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite my Yahoo mail account via Mac-Mail has failed to work - cannot send/receive anything.

This saga started a couple of weeks ago when I decided to upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite. Upgrade went smoothly however my Yahoo mail accounts failed to connect. My Gmail, Outlook, and iCloud accounts all work. My Yahoo account works just fine on my iPhone and iPad, and of course via Web (Safari/Firefox). After trolling through the internet on this I found very few clues for Yahoo mail issues directly linked to Yosemite.

I've deleted the accounts and re-added them (several times). There are two ways email accounts can be added - via Internet Accounts from the System Preferences and also from the Mail application itself. From the Mail application you can also verify the detailed settings of each of the mail accounts. I've checked, double-checked and nothing worked. The following are a sample of the errors I've been receiving:

Mail couldn't log in to the Mail server “Unknown”.

Notes couldn't log in to the IMAP server “Unknown”.

Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server “Unknown”.

Unable to verify account name or password.

Mail can't connect to the Yahoo! account - Enterpassword for xxx.

There was a problem setting up the Mail account - Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server

I am constantly prompted to enter my password. I've checked my settings over and over - the detailed mail account settings via Mail--> Preferences. MyYahoo Contacts, Calendars, Message and Reminders all appear to connect just fine by Mail never does.

After all of this I decided to perform a clean install of Yosemite - so I did and . . . no change . . . Yahoo! mail problem persists.

Not sure what else to try. I am wide open to any ideas or suggestions

For the second time in two weeks, my Yahoo! account is completely unresponsive on my Mac (Apple Mail). Works fine on iPad and iPhone. Gmail and .me accounts work on the Mac, just not Yahoo! I've tried most of the suggestions in these posts, including deleting and reinstalling (took a couple of days!) Any new ideas? I think last time it just decided to finally work, and the delete and reinstall was not necessary. At any rate, I don't want to be out of commission for that long.

This has been broken for at least 48 hours now.

Dorothy, I've been having similar problem the past two weeks. This worked for me: Remove your Yahoo! account from System Preferences, Internet Accounts. Restart your Mac in safe mode (hold down the shift key while booting). Once in safe mode, go back to Internet Accounts in System Preferences and add your Yahoo! account. You should see your Yahoo! mail log in and start to fetch your mail. If it does, go ahead and restart your Mac, so it boots normally. This is what I did to get my Yahoo! to finally start working again.

I think it's because Apple is not setting up the Yahoo mail account correctly under Yosemite. That's what I found for my yahoo account. Open the mail program and from the menus at the top select Mail/Preferences. Then select the Accounts tab and select your account for Yahoo. What does it say the incoming mail server is in the Account Information page?

User uploaded file

I had to set my Yahoo account up manually because Apple was getting the information wrong for the incoming mail server and I could not change/correct the incoming mail server because it was not accessible when using the automated Yahoo mail set up.

Once I set it up manually typing in the correct information myself, the account rebuilt itself immediately including all my subfolders for my yahoo account.

If that's the case for you also, I posted what I had to do in my earlier post above.

I have been having this problem as well. The "inbox" folder is the only one not receiving new mail. Other folders (configured with a filter on Yahoo server-side) receive new mail. Just not "Inbox". I have deleted the account from Internet Accounts and re-added, no change. Clicked Synchronize, etc. Still no mail. This has happened on and off for the past several months. Running Yosemite, latest. Yahoo account added using all defaults. Everything works fine on iPhone, and using Thunderbird on same computer.

My issue is basically identical to what this guy posted:

I learned the trick is to use the "add other account" option and hold down the "option" key while clicking "next" after the credentials have been entered. This gives you the choice of IMAP or POP, and then you have to manually enter the incoming and outgoing mail servers. I don't know who to be more irritated with about this - Apple or Yahoo!/Pacbell

Seems like there's a number of suggestions regarding this so I'll add mine since it was pretty simple for me. In one of the responses there's a link to the Yahoo Mail settings lookup: https://www.apple.com/support/mail-settings-lookup/

When I went to Mail=> Preferences=> Accounts=> Advanced, I noticed the Port Number shown was different than the Incoming Mail Server Port number that I received when I used the above link. I changed this value in the Advanced settings to the value provided from the link and I've been receiving mail ever since.

Good luck!

I think the problem is yahoo acquired many email addresses. For instance my yahoo email address I've had for 15 years or so. It was originally Ameritech, then AT&T acquired Ameritech, which later became a yahoo address. Apple lookup shows my address server as inbound.att.net. That partially works but does not bring in all my folders I've created at yahoo. Plus it's not synced with my read/unread mail with Yahoo and there for my iOS devices registered with the yahoo server. So, manual setup seems to be the only way to point my email address to the correct yahoo mail servers. The problem is, Apple trying to be helpful, tries to automate all this and locks down the information so you can't correct it later. And setting it up manually is a little tricky because it seems they hide setting up everything manually. Plus there are some settings on by default which later lets apple manage your settings. And, they aren't getting the settings correct as can be seen in the lookup page.

See this article: http://guillaumeb.com/ym/imap.html

These settings below are apparently the default that Yahoo uses:

  • Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
  • Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  • Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
  • Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)
  • Username: full email address
  • Password: the password you login to Yahoo! with.

Try to set up using these and see if it works.

Thanks,

John
