Yahoo! mail stopped working with Yosemite

Ever since I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite my Yahoo mail account via Mac-Mail has failed to work - cannot send/receive anything.

This saga started a couple of weeks ago when I decided to upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite. Upgrade went smoothly however my Yahoo mail accounts failed to connect. My Gmail, Outlook, and iCloud accounts all work. My Yahoo account works just fine on my iPhone and iPad, and of course via Web (Safari/Firefox). After trolling through the internet on this I found very few clues for Yahoo mail issues directly linked to Yosemite.

I've deleted the accounts and re-added them (several times). There are two ways email accounts can be added - via Internet Accounts from the System Preferences and also from the Mail application itself. From the Mail application you can also verify the detailed settings of each of the mail accounts. I've checked, double-checked and nothing worked. The following are a sample of the errors I've been receiving:

Mail couldn't log in to the Mail server “Unknown”.

Notes couldn't log in to the IMAP server “Unknown”.

Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server “Unknown”.

Unable to verify account name or password.

Mail can't connect to the Yahoo! account - Enterpassword for xxx.

There was a problem setting up the Mail account - Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server

I am constantly prompted to enter my password. I've checked my settings over and over - the detailed mail account settings via Mail--> Preferences. MyYahoo Contacts, Calendars, Message and Reminders all appear to connect just fine by Mail never does.

After all of this I decided to perform a clean install of Yosemite - so I did and . . . no change . . . Yahoo! mail problem persists.

Not sure what else to try. I am wide open to any ideas or suggestions

I made no change at all, but somehow after two days of NOT working, I started getting email delivered to my Inbox again. In the past, when this has happened, I would spend hours deleting and recreating and reconfiguring. This time, I changed nothing (and used webmail for a couple of days). Apple Mail remained open and running, and eventually it just decided to start working again. At first a trickle of (new) Inbox messages appeared, then eventually the whole collection of Inbox messages finally showed up. Again, I did not change any configuration at all! Weird.

After finding the manual fix in the library for Mail, only one of my email accounts worked. (The other one from the same website never did.) I had no problem with these accounts before the upgrade to Yosemite. Now I cannot do the work for my business.

I have tried to delete all the mail accounts altogether and then add them one at a time. I have used all the possible suggestions for settings from my website host domain.

It just all of a sudden stopped working and kept asking for my password all over again.

I've used Connection Doctor and reset the PRAM.

I have exhausted about 10 pages of suggestions for help from a web search on problems with Yosemite Mail.

Can anyone give any clearer suggestions?

So I've also been experiencing the same or similar issues as others. I did a clean install of Yosemite and then when I was prompted to login to my iCloud account of course I did. It then begins setting the newly installed OS up with my preferred settings from my previois instance of the OS. I.E. my email accounts, Keychain, etc... When I originally signed in I was prompeted with a window saying the password for my xxx@yahoo.com email address was invalid and I could either press cancel or continue. I pressed cancel and thought nothing of it until today.

I was finally frustrated enough not being able to get my yahoo account to sync up I started messing around. I was able to get my yahoo, iCloud, and another POP email account working again by opening System references>iCloud and unchecking the checkbox next to Mail. I then just waited until the process finished and re-checked the Mail checkbox. I was immediately prompted with the same cancel or continue option and I choose continue this time. Shortly thereafter the system prompted me to enter the password for my email account(s), which I did and them voila! Everything started to sync back up again.

I should note that I have a VERY large inbox which did take a while to initially start syncing but it did sync up. I am able to send/ receive from all three of my accounts now with no issues.

I hope this helps someone else experiencing the same issues.

I had this problem also. I had to go to my yahoo account on the web page. Under account security. mark this less secured, see next paragraph. This took care of my problem. I logged right in on the calendar. I kept getting a email that someone else was trying to login to my yahoo account. See 3rd paragraph.

Allow apps that use less secure sign in

Some non-Yahoo apps and devices use less secure sign-in technology, which could leave your account vulnerable. You can turn off access (which we recommend) or choose to use them despite the risks.
