When I hit F11 or F12 to change the sound volume, the pop up sound icon would always show the black corners. Has anyone seen the same issue? The corners just look horrible.

Boot up in safe mode didn't solve the problem at all.
They need to fix this in the next update
Open Activity Monitor --> go to CPU and force quit the "WindowServer" process. Its going to send you back to the login screen. Login again and schould be fine.
There is a bug with the reduce transparency setting. Open the accessibility preference pane, select display, and check if reduce transparency is on. If it is then turn it off and see if that fixes the volume indicator.
Disabling reduce transparency setting fixed the problem.
