Retina iMac Freezing and Restarting

I also have terrible freeze. At first, it stops during the first start, and now it has problem with different apps. Sometimes it disable sound, and i have to relaunch sound apps. Today, it was a problem to log out and shutdown... %(

iMac Retina 3tb FD, 8 Gb RAM.

Maybe i should test some hardwares? Any ideas? Or just wait for 10.10.2?

first i think you need try install 10.10.2 beta 2+ ( in up message I'm give link where you can find beta )

if is not hep try

- do hardware tests ( press button "D" on starts )

- change position you RAM blocks ( try install in down slots, if you have installed up )

- try install windows on hdd and work 1-2 day in windows

iMac 5 K will not complete start up. Received with 16 GB Ram, added 16 GB of third party Ram. Started up and Ram showed up in about Mac. Mouse froze up many times. Removed third party ram. Now it will not complete start up, no chimes and turns itself off after 5 minutes.

Please help

Apple replaced machine. You are best off doing the same.

Unfortunately, i miss my two weeks... so, now i should repair it by myself (i hope that it would't be difficult and expensive)...

So, finally 10.10.2 is here... and it become stable, but graphic is very very slow... even changing desktop images is "step by step" 😟

And what about you? Do you have same problems?

Just want to inform that I have same problem, my new Retina iMac restarts sometimes without any warning. It doesn't seem to be OS related, because I use Windows 8.1.

same issue, although the problem seems much worse for me when working in adobe premiere, as it freezes up almost every 5 minutes when i scrub in the timeline. The problem may be Ram related. i have someone coming in from the reseller store to replace the ram in my system. these kind of issues are really horrible and should never be allowed to get past the test phase of these very expensive machines. One would not even accept it from a mix and match windows setup, let alone hardware that is supposed to work well together. extremely disappointing.

I had exactly the same problem but it was diagnosed that my poorly crafted (probably software related) external LaCie 6GB was the source of the forced restart problem. Of course I now have to transfer everything back to my old Mac (which will take a day or so) then transfer everything back to new Mac via Mac-to-Mac connection. To say i am annoyed at purchasing a $600cdn external drive only to have it make my computer bug out is an understatement.

Similar problem on 27 inch retina iMac; unable to shutdown completely or to start up. The problem is erratic. Sometimes there is no start up chime; other times I get sign in screen but after signing in the screen goes black and nothing more happens. Many troubleshooting tests run without success. Apple to their credit has suggested likely hardware problem and replaced it twice. But still the problem occurs. Have found that the problem stops if I disconnect some or all USB and Thunderbolt connections from the back of the computer. Nevertheless, there is no single (or multiple) device that consistently offends.

Just chiming in with my similar woes. Purchased my new iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015, 4 GHz Intel Core i7) in February and noticed immediately that it was sluggish and glitchy compared to my older late 2012 27-inch iMac:

1. Random and erratic behaviour from the start
2. Spinning Beach Ball Of Doom doing the most menial tasks
3. Bluetooth keyboard disconnects for seconds at a time, numerous times an hour - so frustrating writing emails
4. All progs & system eventually grind to a halt
5. Audio randomly glitchy and then grinds to a static-y halt - half the time I thought it was the music I was listening to
6. Screen refresh very buggy on occasions - major pixilation, artefacts, weird sections of the screen flickering
7. Black screen at startup - I'd be waiting for it to display and realise that the computer is somehow on, with no chime, but the display is black - no way to get in other than force reboot
8. Error messages regarding iTunes Store nearly always
9. Mail giving me disconnected accounts messages, randomly offline
10. Unable to have many Tabs open in Chrome, etc, etc, etc

To name just a few. I brought it back to the store after 3-4 weeks and they graciously gave me a new computer.

Most of the problems still exist but do seem a little infrequent.

The iTunes error messages have stopped, though I occasionally get iCloud error messages. My computer just randomly rebooted straight into the User Login Screen (like, the screen just went blank for a second and I thought it was a powercut, but a second later I was presented with the unfamiliar User login Screen - normally it just boots straight into my account) just a few minutes ago (hence this search for similar stories) and it is beginning to seriously **** me off that my old machine (which my wife now claims) is so much more stable and 'usable' than this state-of-the-art glitch-fest.

Have moved from Sydney to the country so no way can I just 'drop-in' and get it checked. There is obviously some flaw in the design of these retina macs and simply replacing them doesn't solve the issue. There is no way I would recommend the retina iMacs to anyone who needs to get work done on their computer. Too much work has been lost and time wasted trying to 'fix' things.

My old mac looks like a dream machine but my missus is guarding it like it's our baby!

I'm having the same problem in my iMac Retina 5k, 27-inch, late 2015. The operating system is EL CAPITAN . Someone figured out what is causing the problem?

So, I bought the 27" iMac Retina 11 months ago for a music project with my daughter. The unit suffered a failed video component within 30 days and they (Boca Raton Apple Store) exchanged the entire unit cheerfully. The 2nd unit sat boxed for several months while we purchased more gear for the project. About a month ago we finally began using this for recording (Logic Pro). There is nothing else added to the software and the computer is used for no other purpose. From early on (before adding software, RAM, audio interface or thunderbolt hard drive) the computer began restarting randomly and alerting us that it had "been shutdown improperly". It also began freezing from time to time.

Eventually, after studying the Support Forum I tried the suggested disk repairs and OS update. It crashed/froze during both repair attempts and the OS update ultimately causing the computer to no longer boot. Back to the Apple Store (in Boca). They re-imaged the drive, ran hardware tests and said "you're all set!". I asked them to try staring and running the computer just to confirm and, after a couple minutes of web-surfing he says "yep, all set!" Hits "Shut Down" and the computer froze. After observing the problem he checked it in for "further triage". Yesterday (5 days later) I am told that they "finally" got the computer to misbehave. The first tech I spoke with confided that there were known issues with the Fusion Drive and he was pretty sure replacing that would solve the problem. Today I received an official call from them saying they suspected my 32G of aftermarket (non-Apple) RAM. They have ordered a stick of 4G Apple RAM to try. Surprised that a very large and busy Apple store would not have RAM in stock for a current computer model and, that they would dismiss the fact that the problem existed before the RAM upgrade. Now, changing 2 parameters at the same time, brand and capacity?

After purchasing dozens upon dozens of Macs from as far back as 1987 this is my first real problem ever. My main concern is that this seems to be a common, known and possibly resolvable problem yet the store has told me more about my ability to buy extended Apple Care than how they will resolve this. Shame on me for letting this computer sit for several months (expecting it to work like all of it's predecessors) but, does anyone know definitively what has been causing these identical problems for so many users?
