Can i erase my old iphone and deactivate find my iphone if I have already switched my service to my new phone

I have purchased a new iphone and switched my service.

I didn't erase my old iphone or disable find my iphone before I made the switch.

I'm trying to figure out how to erase my phone and disable find my iphone service now so I can sell my old device.

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.1

You don't need internet service for the instructions in the link I provided. See the quote below from that link.

Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.

  • This will completely erase your device, including any credit or debit cards you added for Apple Pay and any photos, contacts, music, or apps. It will also turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services.
  • If you're using iOS 7 or later and have Find My iPhone turned on, your Apple ID and password will be required. After you provide your password, the device will be erased and removed from your account so that the next owner can activate it.

The needs to be able to connect to the internet to verify the Apple ID to turn off Find My iPhone.

I did not mention in my first post that the wifi receiver on my phone was broken. I was only able to get on internet with 4g. Does that matter? When i take the noted steps after I enter my apple password I get the error message "verification failed. the internet connection appears to be offline" and it doesn't let me erase. Could i put my sim card from my iphone 5s into my old phone temporarily to get on 4G? and then erase?

Yup. Without an internet connection, then the phone will not be able to recognize the command to turn off Find My iPhone. Now, you can remove it from the account via iCloud.com, and then when it does connect to the internet in the future, it will authorize the unlock.

This is why that Apple has you turn FMiP off via www.cloud.com when setting up service on a device that is unusable or cannot connect to the internet.
