PC Mp3 folder won't add to itunes on PC

I have seen this topic before but seen no resolution. I have added many PC Mp3 files successfully. All of a sudden folders of MP3 files won't add any longer to Itunes. Any ideas what to do about this? I still have a lot of folders to add. THANK YOU!

Yes, in PC Itunes I use "Add folder to library" and select a folder of MP3 files (an album). I have 87 done this way without incident, though they usually come in with Unknown for the title which I change to the appropriate one. Now, when I do this exact same thing (and I have tried with several different folders) the screen seems to flicker slightly but no album is added, no error msgs, nothing. Ideas? Thanks.

  • Perhaps there is something wrong with the files, why have the other ones appeared as "unknown album"?
  • Perhaps the recent files do have the album information. Have you looked in your Library for that possibility?
  • Have you checked the Songs view, and listed the songs by Date Added, which will then list them as they were added to your Library. From that view, you will see the recently added files. If the "missing" ones are there, then you've found them. If they are not, then are you sure they are in MP3 format, or some other format the iTunes can recognise? Use the view shown below. To add the Date Added column to the view, right-click on the header bar and choose Date Added.

Where did you get them from? If it's from an artist's website, then perhaps they haven't labelled the files correctly in the past.

If none of this helps, try adding the files one at a time, using File/Add file to Library. What happens?

1. I'm not sure what could be wrong with the files. Each folder on the PC was created by reading the CD tracks with Sound Forge and placing them into a named folder. Each file in the folder is named also (by me, as Sound Forge only uses generic names). Everything I am trying to bring into the library was created using this exact method.

2. However, I think you have put me onto the right track. Looking at the Song view, I searched for an item in a folder I had tried to load but which appeared to fail. The songs showed up... added to the last folder that I had loaded. When I looked at songs in that album, it had a random selection of songs from various folders, including all the items that were the correct ones. I deleted that album and then added that folder again. This time the right files came in. However, things are still weird. When I then added the next folder I wanted, the songs from that folder added into the album that I had just previously loaded. More oddities. I selected a completely different folder to add. This time, all the song came in UNDER THE ALBUM NAME of the one I had just deleted. Further, it contained not only those songs, but a random selection of other songs from other folders. So I deleted the album again and picked yet another folder. This time the songs from that folder came in, but under the same album name of the one I had deleted. Very confusing. I renamed the album to the correct name and attempted to add yet another one. This time the songs came in from the one I selected, but again added to this was a random selection of tracks from other folders in the source area. So apparently something is corrupted somewhere, but I am not sure what to do to get back on the right track.

PS: Thank you for your ideas thus far. At least I can see sort of what is happening, although there seems to be no discernible pattern.

More info. I seem to be sort of operating again. PC folders I now import are coming in correctly most of the time but under the name of the folder that I had trouble with earlier. The right tracks (without random other ones) are present most of the time. If I change the album name to the correct one things seem to be ok. I still don't understand what is going on, but as long as I can get done what I set out to do (which is to transfer all this data to the Ipod) its ok. If you have other ideas I'd like to hear them but for the present I can survive. Probably the method I used to bring in the original tracks wasn't the optimum one but it is too late now. Thanks again.

I think at last the mystery may be solved. When I look at the directory entries of some folders on the PC, I see that the "oddball" album name I have been having trouble is associated with those tracks. So it appears that at some point I made some errors in using Sound Forge to bring in the tracks that got this particular name associated with the tracks and this has been confusing Itunes. Anyway, thanks for all the help.

Can I ask why you are using Sound Forge to rip a CD, which you then have to import into your iTunes Library and then rename?

iTunes can import from CD, and find all the track information for the CD, as well as putting the digital files into a folder structure of its choosing. The folders used do make sense, and should you ever need to find the original digital files being used by iTunes, then simply get iTunes to list that information (using "highlight the song in question, use CTRL I (that's an "eye") to bring up the dialogue for that song, and then look on the File tab for the location of the file"). Once you know the file structure iTunes uses, you won't even need to do that, you will simply go directly to the folder for that song or album.

You appear to be going through so many steps with your current method...

  1. create and name folder
  2. use Sound Forge to turn a CD into a digital file
  3. using File/Add folder to Library to import the music into your iTunes Library
  4. having trouble finding that imported music
  5. renaming albums and songs after importing into your iTunes Library
  6. Presumably, also adding artist information
  7. *yawn* .......... I'm getting tired now.

OR

Use iTunes to import:

  1. stick CD in drive, wait for iTunes to see it and find the information about the album (equal to step 2 above)
  2. click import, choose (first time only) the file format - e.g. AAC, MP3 etc. and press go (equal to step 3 above)

... and far less hassle.
