Yosemite random Crash - discoveryd_helper[147]: Basic RemoteControl com.apple.discoveryd_helper Starting XPC Server

Hi Everyone,

i have a crash every now and then. Looks like it has something to do with Networking or Bonjour.

anyone got any idea what it could be ? I learned that

there is no more com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist in OS X 10.10. The service that controls mDNSResponder is now discoverd. The plist file you are looking for is actually:

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

You want to add

--no-multicast
to the ProgramArguments in that file.

  <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/libexec/discoveryd</string> <string>--udsocket</string> <string>standard</string> <string>--loglevel</string> <string>Basic</string> <string>--logclass</string> <string>Everything</string> <string>--logto</string> <string>asl</string> </array>

Becomes

  <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/libexec/discoveryd</string> <string>--udsocket</string> <string>standard</string> <string>--loglevel</string> <string>Basic</string> <string>--logclass</string> <string>Everything</string> <string>--logto</string> <string>asl</string> <string>--no-multicast</string> </array>

but doing this (adding

--no-multicast)
disables finding and communicating with printers in my network and my timemachine backup drive can't be found.

..... any clues ? this is driving me mad.

Well, I'm happy(ish) to report that I found the cause of my crashes. The HDD was dropping out (disconnecting from and completely unseen by the system until reboot). Understandably, storage volumes do not react well to 66% of their media disappearing all of a sudden. I found this by splitting up my Fusion Drive, and installing onto the SSD. I had my user folder on the HDD, so when it dropped, the applications and parts of the OS that know how to run without the contents of the user folder kept running fine while others crashed, hung, or complained.

So at least in my case, the log messages I was seeing were a red herring - just the dying gasp of applications that were crashing just like everything else was. I suspect the shop that installed my SSD made some mistakes (so much for saving time by having someone else do it).

Obviously not everyone here is running a Fusion Drive, so that's not going to be the universal cause. For those still having trouble, go through systematically to eliminate variables. Just because your machine doesn't crash while running a different OS, doesn't mean the problem is with Yosemite. (Unless you're running a 100% Snow White Yosemite install with all original hardware in which case... well, it still could be a hardware failure that doesn't rear it's head under an earlier OS). "Random" crashes aren't really random, they're just caused by something we haven't found yet.

Thanks for this post tanjucat. After performing an extended AHT on my 2008 (3,1) MacPro everything checked out. I also found it a strange coincidence that my Mac Pro was crashing since Yosemite 10.10. I decided to play around with my RAM. My configuration was as follows:

2 x 1GB Kingston RAM (original apple ram) in the Upper Tray Slot 1 and 2.

2 x 2GB Ram Crucial matched pair in Upper tray slots 3 and 4

2 x 2GB Ram Crucial matched pair in Bottom tray slots 1 and 2

For a total of 10 GB or ram. I removed my oldest Kingston Ram which originally came with my MacPro and placed all my Crucial Ram in the upper tray against apple's reccommendations .

My mac no longer crashes. I plan to buy more Crucial Ram and see if I encounter the same once I fill up the bottom tray .

Hi folks,

I had the same problem like you have.

I had up to five system crashes a day with the same crash reports.

I solved the problem in the following way:

I installed ccleaner for mac.

I went to extras, then to startup and I cancelled all the hidden programs and services, wick are not really necessary. Only the startup programs, which are necessary, I didn't cancel.

Since this action my system runs without any problems, it's stable and I din't have any system crashes.

Notice: When I start VMware fusion, (for using windows), I have a crash within a few seconds. I'll kill that ****** ******' program!

I hope, you will have a success with my hints.

Good luck!

I have exactly the same, happened multiple times today in a row.

kernel panic > reboot > a few seconds after reboot > crash and reboot automatically

Yosemite is totally unstable it's sooooo annoying. I normally let the other debug but I thought it would be fine now...

What i have done so far:

1. Verify Disk utility First Aid "Verify Permissions"

2. Stopped using TimeMachine, (TimeMachine runs over the network via afp bonjour) Believe this could be the issue, since The timemachine backup was erased, and is not communicating.

3. Ran the ccleaner tool per the post. Will updated if the crashes stop. I am on my 12th crash in four days. Only began in the last 4 days.

******************************Solved with Explanation**********************************************

Per Josef4321 ccleaner works.

Why?

XPC is making calls to downloaded folders files that are no longer current, if these are large files, the XPC app as a security measure will stop if they don't see them. So recently I downloaded several large .iso's. So by running the ccleaner tool, which deleted my:

Internet cache

internet history

cookies

download history and a few other items.

The XPC app headers that are mapped in the cache are deleted so they are not making calls to Phantom data.

I believe that people with iTunes or TimeMachine may have similar crashes because XPC works with them in a security manner, and if you have large files such as itunes, or iphoto, etc the same result can happen.

I can't believe Apple doesn't fix this, my Mac is USELESS right now and I may have to revert back to Moutain Lion... a crash every other day is NOT ACCEPTABLE when used in a professionnal environment

Hi,

what helped me in the end was uninstalling my virus scanner - which I have not yet switched back on. By the time I figured that, I reset all the transient RAM, switched my scheduled reboot off, had multiple reboots into safe mode, disconnected and reconnected my USB devices, updated jbridge kernel extension that gave some errors during boot, and finally reloaded the OS X from the recovery disk. I have run the MAC since then 24/7 and not a single crash - about three weeks ago.

Also, I have switched verbose boot on, so I can see the messages during boot and since latest OS release the hardware error messages have disappeared and it's looking quite ok now. Keeping my fingers crossed

Kind regards

Andreas

Me temo que... Apple está alejándose del mundo profesional. Está quedando relegado a los 'guays'. Antes también, pero al menos eran eficaces herramientas de trabajo. Hoy día, su fiabilidad está bajo mínimos. Una pena.

English version:

I'm afraid... Apple is moving away from the professional world. It is relegated to the 'cool' people. IT's been always relegated to the 'cool' people, yes, but they were at least effective tools. Nowadays, its reliability is below zero. A shame.
