Cannot accept family sharing invitation

It is correct that this can only be opened from the mail app. If there is an account (iCloud or otherwise) associated with the mail app on the device, forward the email to that account, and then click on the link from there.

This may be due to the fact that he is running iOS 7.1.2 on his iPhone. The minimum system requirem for Family Sharing is iOS 8, as noted in the following article:

I have an identical situation, where an invitation is sent to a family member whose Apple ID is linked to a gmail account. The invite arrives in their gmail app in the iphone. When the invitation is clicked it opens a link in Safari and it says it needs to be opened from the mail app. However, each time you click it, it opens Safari and does not allow you to accept the invitation.

The iphone (6s) is running on iOS 9.1

Any suggestions on how to resolve this (getting to accept the invitation) would be extremely appreciated.

I'm having the exact same issue tonight as you have described here. Everything worked great for both my acct and my husband's acct...but when I sent the invite to add my daughter who uses a gmail address...no matter what we tried, it will not let her accept the invite. I even tried deleting the invite and starting over but that button in the family share iCloud area once I click on her name doesn't work either. So frustrating. It's like apple doesn't want someone using a gmail acct with the iCloud service. Her iOS is 10+ so that is not the issue.
