iMessage goes to stranger instead of my contact

For some reason, when I try to text my friend while iMessage is activated on my phone, the message goes to a complete stranger (who is getting annoyed with me). If I SMS to the same number, it goes through to my friend just as it should. My friend does not have an iOS device. I really don't want to turn iMessage off on my phone, because most of the people I know have iPhones and I like the iMessage features. I'm finding that I have to turn iMessages on and off throughout the day just to text my friend (which is a pain).

What could be causing the iMessage to go to the wrong person? I'm sending to the exact same phone number each time. Is there a way within the iMessage app to designate whether I want the text to be send as SMS without turning iMessage on and off in the settings?

Thanks for the help!

I don't know if this will work or not but go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessages. Then go into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. (You'll likely have to connect to your wifi again so know your wifi password if you have one. If you have any bluetooth devices paired you have to pair them again too.) Once you've connected to wifi turn iMessages back on.
