can you use the kindle reading app on the ipod touch 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen?

I have limited funds and a broken ipod touch 4th gen 32gb, so unfortunately I have to seek out a second hand ipod touch and can only afford to buy up to a 3rd gen 8gb hence this question as the kindle app is VERY important to me but the young man serving me in the shop revealed he didnt think that the kindle app is compatible with earlier than a 4th gen as the lower gens wont update. Please helpnas I have not got money to waste. Can I use any of the 1st to 3rd gen ipod touches to use kindle app?

Maybe by:

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

Also, you said " 3rd gen 8gb" That is a a 2G iPod, Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. A 2G can pnly go to 4.2.1

Thanks so much for the answer its been a big help, the shop I went to had one ipod touch which has no box and the back is scratched so he didnt no which gen this was, I have looked at all passages you sent to me and havent seen anywere how to identify which gen it could be. I remember from previous ipods owned that there is a page which has specs on. Is this the only way, if indeed this page does have the info I need, to know which gen this un boxed ipod is?
