Adwaremedic is it safe ?

Hello everyone .. I would like to ask if the adwaremedic program is the safest way to remove adware from the mac. Lately I m having some pop up advertisements from a specific site called mac keeper. I have no idea how this ad came up since I am not downloading torrents nor visiting any suspicious site .

So is this the only way to permanently remove the adware? Is it safe , since this is a third party program? Thanks in advance everyone

Since you're posting on a topic about AdwareMedic, is it safe to assume you already tried AdwareMedic and found that it also didn't solve the problem? If so, see:

If you have not done so, be aware that Apple's support document on removing adware is not all that complete. Try either AdwareMedic or the manual removal instructions found in my Adware Removal Guide.

(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com.)

I don't think you mean that you have installed MacKeeper, but that you have those annoying pop-ups and pop-unders. This can happen even after use of AdwareMedic, because you visit sites that are "hacked" by MacKeeper to display such a "invitation". These are sites that you should not visit, but who knows in advance? Sometimes it helps to install the Adblock extension in your browser, do not use Glimmerblocker (proxy) nor use AdblockPlus (see thesafemac.com , the site of professor Thomas Reed, thanks Thomas).

Regular use of AdwareMedic is advised by me.

If you earlier have installed MacKeeper and uninstalled it already, look at the uninstall by hand method as explained on thesafemac.com

Very often there are leftovers that may disturb your system. I hope that I said it correctly (Thomas?).

"MacKeeper" is very heavily promoted on the Web with intrusive ads. The fact that you sometimes see those ads doesn't necessarily mean that you're infected with adware. It may only mean that you're visiting trashy sites, or sites that have been hacked, or that you should consider using an ad blocker such as "GlimmerBlocker." But if you're seeing ads on well-known sites where you didn't see them before, and where you don't see them now when you browse on other devices, that is an indication of adware.

Sorry Thomas, by currently running system do you mean for example if you had partitions with multiple OS's it is only scanning the current one being run, or am I misunderstanding.

If for example I install to a USB key instead of the applications folder, and my Mac only has the one OS installed, as long as I run this program in all user accounts on the Mac that should be all that's required?

Yes, that's correct.

Yup.

I have run Adware Medic, it didn't find anything, got another pop-up today. It pops up in the background in it's own window so I only notice it once I start closing out the Safari window. I try not to visit any trashy sites. Mostly just sites I know, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix. I've checked and have no browser extensions showing in the extension list and pop-up blocker checked in the Safari security settings.
