Can't resize Excel spreadsheet

I have an Excel spreadsheet that I can't resize because it extends beyond the bottom of the screen. Same spreadsheet works on my secretary's iMac and we are running the same OS 10.10.

The resize button is no help because that causes the computer to go into full screen mode and then the resize box at the bottom right corner is not there. I have had this problem before but usually if I hide the dock or move it I can get to the resize box.

Any ideas. It seems that there are a number of problems after upgrading to Yosemite.

This one has annoyed me for several weeks so I just tried some simple things again.

I finally found that pulling the spreadsheet to a smaller size, then selecting the View pull down menu, and then re-selecting Normal (which was already selected), then saving and then re-opening the spreadsheet gave me the saved, reduced size. Someone else may care to explain why!

Quick, though clumsy solution: CONTROL-COMMAND-F reverses the full screen mode, brining back normal controls. More serious is if your spreadsheet becomes oversize with the resizing handles off the screen. Solution there involves changing screen resolution to shrink the spreadsheet to a size where you can access the lower-right corner for resizing.

edit: GeOS, i read your message really fast, and I failed to see that you indeed provided for the solution! My bad! :-)

My original message below:

I face the same problem with Charles, and its quite frustrating to be honest..

GeOS3, its not a problem with full screen mode. Actually, when you are in full screen mode, you can see the different excel sheets and all. But when you exit full screen mode, the excel window gets so big, you can't see the resize box at the bottom right corner (and thus, you are unable to resize your window)..

However, your answer did provide for a clumsy solution! :-) Charles, try to change your screen resolution. That will force excel to resize the sheet, and you will see again the resize box at the corner. You may then resize your spreadsheet, and then change back to your default resolution.

This seems to work for me, but I would much rather prefer for a software update (that will remove this glitch..) :-)

Cheers,

Angelo

PS: you can get the same function that the green button used to have (that is, to resize your window), by keeping pressed the "alt" button when you click it. This seems to work well in other applications though, but not in excel..

Sparkleberry,

Using the Option key produces 3 different behaviors in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. See fourth paragraph below:

The continuing issue is a conflict bug between Yosemite (OS X 10.10) and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 (Version 14). With the latest versions of Office (14.4.7) and Yosemite (10.10.1), the problems continue to persist.

SUMMARY

Clicking the Green Stoplight Button in the upper left corner to go to Full Screen Mode takes you to a Full Screen Mode that is not reversible with another click of the Green Stoplight Button, because the Green Stoplight Button completely disappears in this Full Screen Mode.

SOLUTION

The solution is to use the Keyboard equivalent of the Green Stoplight Button: Command-Control-F. This behavior is true for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

OPTION KEY

According to Apple, under Yosemite, you can revert to Mavericks (OS X 10.9) behavior of the Green Stoplight Button by holding Alt/Option before clicking the Green Stoplight Button. However this action results in three, distinctly different behaviors in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint:

1) In Excel, this is a null command; absolutely nothing happens.

2) In Word, the widow enlarges to the full width of the zoom specified in the Zoom Window of the Quick Access Toolbar, with the stoplight buttons still atop the window; on the second Alt/Option click of the Green Stoplight Button, the window returns to its original size.

3) In PowerPoint, the window enlarges to full screen, with the stoplight buttons still atop the window, behaving as PowerPoint did in Mavericks.

Same problem. None of the proposed solutions work. I need to see the bottom of the workbook when I am working with multiple windows open. Thus the fact that I can get to the bottom of a workbook in Apple's new full screen green button option helps me 0.

This bug is extremely annoying for anyone that needs to work with multiple windows open that includes more than one excel workbook.

Also rather ironic, as I find this new full screen behavior that Apple instituted to be very Microsoft-like: an engineered solution to a problem that did not exist that results in a worse outcome.

Thanks for the response, Csound1, but your solution unfortunately only works if the Excel originally opened the file in a way that made the entire workbook visible without expansion to full screen. That sometimes happens. But more often, Excel opens a file in a manner that has the bottom of the workbook off the screen. In that case, in you go back from full screen to normal view you lack the bottom of the workbook.

This is a significant bug to people that use workbooks with multiple sheets in single workbook in combination with other files. Unless and until it is fixed, a person doing that who wants to switch between sheets while working with other files, has to expand to full screen, change which sheet is active in the workbook and then go back to normal view. That frankly *****. And it (again) is Microsoft like, in that there was not a problem before Apple engineered one into existence.

This is also a significant bug for people that may want just a small portion of a spreadsheet open while working on other files. For example, you are in Word writing a letter about things listed on a spread sheet and about the files in certain folder. In that case, you may well want the excel sheet and the finder window one on top of the other on the side of your screen and word open on the remainder. With this bug, that is not possible, because the only think you can control on excel is the amount of lateral space it uses, not the amount of vertical space.
