I did not expect this to help, and so far it seems that I was wrong. I did it about 20 hours ago and so far so good.
Here's some things that I noticed in my troubleshooting, and I think they might explain why it's OK now:
- Restoring the iPad as a new device didn't fix it, but I connected to iCloud via LTE and I distinctly recall it reconfigured my wifi on its own, which I at the time thought was kind of cool, because it also restored wifi settings for places I frequent. Now I'm not so sure it was all that great.
- When I reset networking on the iPad it also deleted all the wifi points on my iPhone 5s. That means that stored networks are shared across the iCloud account.
So what I think that means is that something in the stored wireless configuration was broken for the iPad that the iPhone could cope with. Resetting wireless configuration does seem to be doing the trick for me, as it's been stable much longer than updating 8.1.2 did. I'll let it go a couple more days and will post back, probably on Saturday or Sunday.
