itunes is currently unavailable

My Apple TV 3 has been playing up for a few days, possibly since the latest update - not sure.

Basically, i can no longer play any purchased TV/movies or iTunes Match music via the Apple TV (still fine via my other Apple devices - Mac, iPad 2, iPhone 4S) and the following message appears, accompanied with a black screen and yellow triangle "iTunes is currently unavailable. Try again later."

I've searched the forms boards and found a bunch of possible solutions that haven't worked: reset and/or restart Apple TV, Sign out and back in to iTunes on both the Apple TV and my Mac, switched Dolby Digital from Auto, On and Off - nothing has worked.

Could this be an Apple server authentication issue? On purchased movies and TV, it's at the authentication stage that things seem to stop.

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. Right now, iTunes Match and Apple TV aren't doing the job I paid for.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  2. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  3. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  4. Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
  5. Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

I'm sure that most of you have figured this out, but you can watch purchased content if it's downloaded on your mac by using the "Home Sharing" function. No, we shouldn't have to, but in the meantime it's something so that you can enjoy your content.

I work for a company that offers a competing streaming device... Never purchased one, but maybe it's time to give that a shot.

I've been having this problem for several days, have phoned Apple twice (after going through all the appropriate steps of resetting/restoring, etc.). Technician was quite rude and informed me that it was an issue with iTunes and just keep trying to reset every hour to see if they get it fixed from their end. Any luck with anyone else yet? I am in BC, Canada.

Its day four here.

I can't access any music or movies. Can access some extras content and previews on movies which is bizzare. I sent an email with no response after the first day, still no response. Today a second email was sent. The bizzare thing is the problem is only with AppleTV. I can stream anything I want to the PC and iPad. Don't waste your time signing in and out or rebooting. I've done it all.

Nothing like having your entire library held hostage. Bravo Apple!

Just a note Apple. If you are having a problem, explain to people what that problem is and how long you think it will take to repair it. At least let people know you care enough that you are doing something about it. VUDU is looking really good right now....Disney just signed up with them and they already had everyone else through Ultraviolet and I don't need your little box to access VUDU, my Bluray player can do it. Amazon is talking to Ultraviolet an Disney too so I'll sit idle on your system for a bit so I can decide which ecosystem I want to move to, but I'm just about done here.

Can get a heck of a tablet too for half the cost if I don't need iTunes.

I'm in this boat too.

This started after I set up Family Share for our family.

iTunes content is available on our computers and iOS devices with the exception of my Apple TV (3rd gen).

I've performed all of the typical tech troubleshooting.

Netflix and other services function properly.

The lovely "iTunes is currently unavailable. Try again later." occurs whenever we try to watch purchased iTunes content. The failure is obviously occurring at the authorization stage. (Logging in & out with the hopes of something magically changing is the textbook definition of terminally insane, yes?)

I've checked everything I can think of on my end... All systems "Go".

...waiting...

...waiting...
