G4 ZIF in G3 PowerMac?

I couldn't find the powermac G3 forum so I guess it'll have to due here.
Anyways I have a powermac G3 and was wondering if it might be worth it to take the processor from of a Yikes! g4 and put it into my G4.
So I have a couple of questions:
Would it me much faster? I ahve a 400Mhz G3 in there now.
Could I still overclock it? I hear that G3's are easily overclocked by modifying the jumper, couldI still do this with the G4?

Thanks for the help.

Hi

If it's a B&W G3 I believe it's possible but you have to use one of the G4 enabler utilities that the third party processor upgrade companies provide. Presumably this allows the boot ROM in the G3 to recognise the G4 processor.

It may be worth checking the CPU Upgrades database at www.xlr8yourmac.com. If you select Apple for the card manufacturer, you'll see reports from people who have upgraded their Macs using processor cards pulled from other Macs.

The G4 enabler software is a free download from here.

The enabler has to be run while booted to OS 9.2.2 or lower (not classic mode in OS X), and while the G3 chip is still in place.
It will not affect the B&W's ability to use a G3, so you could run it and try the G4, and if it doesn't work, you could reinstall the G3.
