Encrypted iPhone backup corrupted. Know the password. How can I recover it?

My encrypted backup will not restore. It says "because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored."

I was trying to recover an image from an older backup last night so i backed up, tried to restore the older backup but it just sat at the apple logo, eventually i had to go into DFW because it wouldn't do anything. I ended up running the default restore on a computer at work. I get home and try to restore my backup and it gives that error and doesn't recognize that I have previous backups in iTunes.

Downloaded a third party program and selected the backup and gave it my password, and it showed me the file structure inside the backup intact and said my backup is good, but they want $60 for the 'pro' version that retrieves files from encrypted backups.

I have the password and it's in my iTunes folder. How can I get at it with iTunes and decrypt it?

I don't really care all that much about restoring the backup I just want the pictures. Everything else is on iCloud.

Hi James,

Hopefully you've gotten your pictures back by now, but I wanted to follow up just in case you haven't.

As you've already mentioned, there is the option to use various extraction tools (I work on one called Decipher Backup Browser, that is a little cheaper) to pull the data you need out of the backup, assuming the backup isn't incomplete as part of being broken.

Another option is try to fix some of the glitches in the backup that are causing it to be reported as corrupted. I've been doing a lot of work along this front lately, and made a program called Decipher Backup Repair that will fix the bugs in the backup so it can restore using iTunes. I'm pretty proud of it 🙂 and if you decide to poke around at it, you'll see many happy reviews on our testimonials page.

(Note: As I mentioned in this post, I'm a developer of the programs I'm suggestion. So, I stand to benefit, financially or otherwise, from the links I'm providing.)
