My display remains black after wake from sleep. How do I fix it?

As stated, my MacBook Pro display remains black after waking from both full sleep and "Energy-Saver" display shut-off. When I wake the machine or try to activate the display, I get nothing but a black screen. To be clear: the display is not OFF. Simply black. I can change the backlight up and down, thus displaying a very bright or very dim black screen. The keyboard backlight is fully functional as well. My mouse isn't visible, and no trackpad gestures work. The issue started shortly after installing Yosemite, though I'd hate to link the two events together. The only way to actually get the display back is a hard reset. As you can imagine, I'm rather tired of resetting my machine. I've tried rebooting in safe mode, and resetting the SMC/PRAM. The issue presents regardless of whether I intentionally put the machine to sleep or allow it to turn off on it's own. Any tips, questions, or suggestions are welcome.


This issue is on my only machine and is very frustrating, so I'd love to fix it asap. Here's the build:


15" Mid 2010 MacBook Pro

2.4GHz Intel Core i5

8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Intel HD Graphics 288 MB

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M


OS X Version: 10.10.2 (14C68k)

Kernel Version : Darwin 14.1.0


Also running (generally):

iTunes Version: 12.0.1.26

Safari Version: 8.0.2 (10600.3.5)

MacBook Pro, Other OS, OS X 10.10.2

Same problem here, it has started with Yosemite 10.10.2, with 10.10.1 it was working properly. I also have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro and I have seen some display flickering while using Safari too...

Same thing - prior AirParrot installation!


The following fixed the problem once and for all:


For Macs running OS X 10.6, the following commands can be run from the terminal:


  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext
  • sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.squirrels.AirParrot.plist
  • sudo rm -rf /Applications/AirParrot.app

For users using OS X 10.9 or 10.10 the following additional commands may be necessary:

  • sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
  • sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext

Andrew from Squirrels here. We're aware of the incompatibility with 10.10.2 and the AirParrot display driver. At this point, it's unclear if this an AirParrot driver issue or a wider issue with 3rd party display drivers on 10.10.2. As 10.10.2 is still in beta, its possible this interaction is a bug on the OS side that will be resolved prior to release. We've reached out to Apple for feedback on what may have changed in 10.10.2 that introduced this behavior.


The researching of the cause of this issue is ongoing and we will provide an update for AirParrot once we're able to determine the issue.

I have the exact same model and spec. I also have the exact same issue. What I did is go to /Users/(UserName)/Library/Preferences and deleted the loginwindow.plist file. It won't let you delete the file as it will be in use, so you need to move it to your desktop and restart your mac. Once you do that, you can delete it from your desktop. The issue seems to be fixed. I don't know if it is permanent. The system rebuilds the file. I would also try deleting the com.apple.loginwindow file if this did not work.

Ran into the same problem on my mid-2012 MacBook Air. After reading the list of files in mwiegelmann's comments, I realized I had installed Edovia's Mini Display sometime in the past. Removed the following files and sleep is working again:


/System/Library/Extensions/EdoviaVirtualDisplay.kext

~/Library/Preferences/com.edovia.minidisplay.server

Andrew from Squirrels here again. We've just released AirParrot 1.6 which will correct this issue for anyone with AirParrot installed and having black screen issues on 10.10.2. Hi All:


Update Final (Hopefully): Removing all of the drivers and install files from AirParrot(2) was a successful fix for this issue on my machine. Thanks to all the suggestions and contributors, and an especially big thanks to the guys over at Squirrels for paying attention and getting a fix out. Good luck to anybody still suffering similar issues.

I've been having the same issue since installing the 10.10.2 beta.


Even though I don't use AirParrot any longer on my MacBook Air 11", apparently I had the drivers still installed (from the original migration??). Manually removed them all and now My MacBook Air (OS X 10.10.2 (14C81f) no longer wakes to black.

My display remains black after wake from sleep. How do I fix it?
