Not receiving text alerts when headphone jack is plugged in to iphone

I have posted this question before but a will post it again and rephrase it. When I am at a coffee shop or with a friend a put my iphone on the table. When a text message comes through the screen will not light up to say I have received a text message and it won't make an alert sound. This only happens when my headphone jack is plugged into my iphone 5.

iPhone 4, Windows 7

No alerts on phone speake when plug in headphones !!!

This is useful when you driving or walking you can't keep the headphones in all the time to know if there is an SMS or other apps alerts, please we need this to be sortout or add an option in settings to turn it on or off !!

There's nothing to be "sorted out" as it's working as designed.

Ok, that's working the way it's supposed to. I'll have to test out the visible indicators for alerts next time I'm near a wired headset. However, there are apps that, if they are active, prevent the display of text notifications, as I recall. It's to prevent your experience from being interupted.

I can hear the alert through the headphones when I have them on and am listening to music. And my iphone will make an alert sound and light up and display a text message when the headphones are not plugged into the iphone. However when I take the headphones off my head and put the iphone on a table with the headphone jack still plugged into the iphone a text message will come through but the iphone wont display the text message or light up the screen.. It s just when I push the home button I realize I have received a text message. No apps are active as I push the home button twice and remove each active app. Yes I have notifications >messages Show on lock screen on.,

Yes I can hear the alert through the headphones when I have them on. I can hear the alert through the phone speakers when I take the headphones out. I have notifications enabled in the lock screen. The only app that's on is the music app. Its just when the headphones are plugged into the iphone and I rest the iphone on a table the screen won't light up or display when a text message comes through. I have to turn the iphone on by pushing the home button to see that I have received a text message. Tried resetting the iphone same issue.

I cannot hear an alert sound when the headphone jack is plugged into the iphone and I have the headphones around my neck not listening to music. I think the headphone jack cuts out the alert sound. But still the screen will not light up or display when I receive a text message while I have the headphone jacks plugged in. This problem doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes but still very frustrating.

Thankyou for your advice.

This problem only started when I had my iphone 5 replaced at apple on 20th September because my old iphone was faulty. You summed up my problem for me. There are no visible indicators on my iphone when I receive a text message when I have my headphones plugged into my iphone. I don't unplug my headphones when Im not listening to music because the cord is too long and the headphone jack might get damaged. I just rest the iphone on a table in lock mode. Do you know if it is a software or hardware problem.

Thank you very much for your ongoing advice.

I only have the headphones plugged in when I'm out visiting friends or at a coffee shop and rest the iphone on a table. If I unplug the headphones at a coffee shop the cord is too long and there is nowhere to put the headphone jack.it will just be dangling loose. but as you said when the headphones are plugged in there is no visible indicators when a text comes through All I want to know is why is there no visible indicators when I receive a text message while the headphones are plugged into my iphone. The screen should light up and display the text message but it dosent. Even if I use the mute switch there are still no visible indicators when a text comes through

Hi Meg,

Thanks for your advice. You are the only one that has replied to my problem and I still haven't been able to resolve it. Show on lock screen is on. If my settings do not have show in lock screen enabled the problem would happen with all text messages I receive. As I stated before this problem dosent happen with all text messages I receive just sometimes it occurs. The only other option I have left is to go to the apple genius bar and see if they can help me.

Cheers
