bird process draining memory

There's a process called bird that's using an ever-increasing amount of RAM up from when I log in to when the system freezes. Killing it causes it to respawn a few minutes later.

Mac Air, late 2010. Upgraded OS recently. I have the same issue with the new bird process. Also the cpu is at 95% or more and the fan runs all the time. Everything seems to run slower as well. Tried to use Activity Monitor to end the process but starts again soon after it is stopped. The suggestion above did not do much if anything, in this case. Not sure what to do at this point. Open a call with support is one option but will cost $29.00 for that. Not very happy with this, somewhat like Norton Security on Windows.
