I purchased an iPad at Walmart the other day and the price seemed low at $299(originally $399 and was reduced pricing for Black Friday). On the box it states: MD513LL\A iPad Wi-Fi 16gb White. The model # is A1458. Is this a refurbished model? I cannot find anything on the box that states this and does not want to open it.

Check the warranty coverage there.
Just before the iPad Air 2 came out the iPad 4 was selling for $349 USD at the Apple Store. Apple refurbrished can only be had at the Apple online store. I think you're safe.
