RAM - is Hardware test or memtest best?

Hi

I'm having regular kernel panics - about 1 a day so have tested the RAM to see if that's causing the problem.

The Apple Hardware test is showing a problem with DIMM0 (would I be correct in thinking DIMM1 is the factory install?)

However, using the memtest software doesnt show any faults... which one is liable to me more accurate?

Thanks

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hello,

I'll agree with the others, and say that if the memory shows bad in any test that I would be concerned.

But, as for which one I would take most seriously, I would trust Apple's in this case. There are two reasons:

First, Apple's hardware test rarely has a false positive. It will miss problems with memory more than it catches them. So, if it finds a problem, I would consider it a definitely problem.

Second, this is the only test that Apple is going to take seriously and care about. They are not going to rely on your findings from an unsupported 3rd-party program. Since they cannot control the quality of that other test, they are not going to replace parts based on it's results. So, they will only take the results from their own tests seriously. And, you can call them with the error code that the test returned, and they will issue a replacement part for you (assuming that it is their memory module that's bad and not one you installed from somewhere else).

I hope this helps.

User uploaded fileWelcome to the discussions!

Memtest is generally a more thorough and deeper test, but it is a specialized RAM only test. I agree that if either one shows a RAM error that it is to be taken seriously. You are getting KPs and they are likely to be caused by bad RAM, and if either Memtest or the AHT comes back with a RAM error - that sounds like you found the problem to me.

DIMM0 is the factory install, I have 2 sticks of 512 RAM totalling 1GB in my BTO Rev A, they are labeled DIMM0 and DIMM1, since the iMac was sold originally with 512 of RAM, I assume it would have been in the 0 position.

I agree with the previous posters, both apps are good, and any RAM fault should be taken seriously, bad things happen with bad RAM.
