I just received notice from Canon that they will not develop a printer driver for OS10.10.1 for their Pixma MX850 product. Does anyone have a recommendation? thx.

I tried installing my Canon Pixma MX850 printer/scanner on OS 10.10.1. The printer does not show in the printers & scanners "add" box. Contacted support who said that there was as of yet no driver made by Canon for this printer and suggested I contact Canon. I did, and their response is basically "sorry, but we're not going to make one..." Is there any way around this? Can I install drivers for earlier OS versions? Thx in advance!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

I have the same problem and found to my own surprise a solution. The problem is: I’m not yet very sure what I did. But this is, what I believe how it works:

I entered in Safari http://localhist:631. This is the CUPS-Homepage. (If it doesn’t appear, one has to go to Terminal and enter cupsctl WenInterface=yes.)

Here I took the tab "Administration" and after this the button "Add printer".

And here is the point where I'm unsure. At first I made this: I activated "LPS/LPS-Host or -printer", entered at the next page in "Connection" lpd://ip-address/queue, on the next page the entered the name and on the next one the driver. (It hjas to be installed before.)

This didn’t bring any change, but when I tried it once more next tome, I foun in the first window under "Discovered Network Printers" this: "Canon MX 850..." I activated this option, and that’s all. Now the printer is there where it shall be.

I’n not an IT expert, so I don’t know if the first step was necessary. May be somebody can correct this. but anyway: it worked.

Now I’ll test what’s about the scanner...

This shows that you added the printer using Bonjour, as this is the only way to discover the printer on the network. So the concern here is that you first tried to add the printer using LPD but it didn't work, and that is what PreTravel is getting (albeit via the Add printer facility). Having read through several MX850 manuals I cannot find a process of enabling LPR or even if it has such an option. If not the confusing thing is how have the others who posted here managed to get their MX850 working???

User uploaded fileWell. I did it once more on another Mac after a clean install. I did this:

1. I installed the driver (as you recommended, the version 108402).

2. I enabled the Webinterface for CUPS: I opened es Terminal an entered there

cupsctl WebInterface=yes

3. I opened the CUPS Website:

http://localhost:631

4. I selected the button "Add printer", a password window popped up, where I enetered my user name ans password:

5. The next page opened: "Add printer":

6. I selected the Canon printer and pressed "Continue“ and saw the next page:

7. Here I changed name and location and pressed "Continue“ to see the next page:

Hey Welsbach, This worked for me too! Danke!

Thank you also PaHu for the significant amount of research you did on this. Such a shame that these big companies can't just make these things work when we spend so much money on their goods. I was about to give up and just go and buy a cheap printer to use with this one computer. You efforts are very sincerely appreciated and I wish you both well.

Kind regards

In case this is helpful to anyone: I had the same problem with my Canon MX300 - after upgrading to Yosemite, I found that Canon has no driver for Yosemite and Apple has no driver for this printer. However, when I downloaded the most recent driver version for this printer, I was able to ADD a new printer and it picked up the new driver by default and it works.

PAHU, I have the new mac running os X Yosemite 10.10. 5 and I have a canon PIXMA MP620 printer that i'm trying to use together but canon's website says they don't have the driver from this. Do u think if i followed your steps with and older driver for that printer it will work with my mac? Thanks in advance for your kind advice

I updated to El Capitan several nights ago and only yesterday found out that my MX850 wouldn't work because of a "filter error". I followed PAHU's instructions to download the driver and create a new printer using the IP address. I double checked my work and found no mistakes, but it didn't work for me. (I didn't follow any of the steps in subsequent posts, so maybe if I had, ultimately it would have worked.) My MX850 is networked through my Airport Extreme by USB (which is now all it's used for along with a guest network since getting the new U-verse router.) I did a little tweeking with the Extreme settings (really only changed the base and network passwords) and somehow my original MX850 settings now work again. I tried the secondary created using the printer IP addy, but it's still not working. This may or may not help anyone, but if your network is configured similarly, it might be worth it to try troubleshooting the router. Certainly worth it before going out and buying a new printer like I thought I was going to have to do.

Since someone in the thread brought this up, I have never been able to use the scan feature since moving the MX850 to the WiFi network, which I had to do to connect it to a phone line for the Fax function. That only works when the machine is connected to the Mac by USB.

I just received notice from Canon that they will not develop a printer driver for OS10.10.1 for their Pixma MX850 product. Does anyone have a recommendation? thx.
