Why don't the checkboxes next to an assignment work in my course?

I have attempted to create two self-directed courses. In both courses the checkboxes next to the assignments don't work. What setting am I missing?

if you're logged into the administrator (teacher) of the course, you can't check the boxes. try logging in as a student and see if they work.

at least that's my experience.
