Iphone iOS 8.1.2 battery drain remains

Hi!

As I have been seeking for a solution to my iPhone 5s battery drain problem after iOS 8 install, I have to note that today, after all of the updates the battery life remains non existent.

Battery drain in only half a day without light use, everything turned off, and not a single app installed. And the most surprising part that battery drains overnight, without use, on a airplane mode.

In the battery usage window the things I see:

  1. 65 % Phone (low signal)
  2. 17 % Home & Lock Screen
  3. 14 % Settings
  4. 4 % Messages

What has been done?

  • Did many fresh installs of software from update (itunes and iCloud)
  • Fresh install setting as new phone
  • Fresh install, setting as a new phone and creating new apple id;
  • Settings are set up to save every percent of the battery (including no WIFI, and no cellular data). So at this point my iphone is just a phone to ring.

Did not see any improvement over the updates iOS 8.0.2, iOS 8.1.1

I would be so appreciative for your further support in solving this question.

Thank you Kwopau for the information. Great news for you finding the solution!

As for me, I am on 5s and no carrier update was issued. The worst thing about this, is that phone battery keeps dropping huge percents even with no sim card inside.

Is anyone experience that?

And overall, my use is reduced to minimal, MAX 1 hour per charge. But the phone battery can last at maximum 7 hours. But this was the total maximum.

I am completely frustrated by this issue.

I had the battery drain since July. Tried a million settings, reinstall of IOS etc. Finally contacted apple support with about 1 month of warranty left. Got a new phone and pushed the backup on to it and it was PERFECT. All settings on and perfect!

Now, 2-3 months later, i'm having the SAME friggin problems. I'm tired of this and going to give up on iphone. it lasts 4 hours, 1 hr usage and 3 hrs standby and at 25%! I'm thinking it's because I downloaded the newest IOS update which broke it via WIFI.

After this most recent update 8.1.3 on my 5s I noticed that my battery will not keep a charge it might last half a day with very little usage and I noticed that when I am using it that it is heating up extremely hot, I haven't seen anyone saying that their phone gets hot while using it but this is a cause for concern if the new update is what's caused this. I have a small business and my phone is my contact and this is ridiculous. since my last full charge (this morning) I have usage of 6 hours and its at 10% at 830pm and that's with a partial charge mid day...

I Visited my local Apple store yesterday and my Genius told me everything was fine!

Like many of you I've exoerienced a sudden and drastic drop in battery life.

EVerything but bare bones are shut off and it still requires 2-3 charges a day.

BAttery looses power even when phone is shut off ..... but as my Genius said your battery and software are fine, see look right here on the diagnostic screen.

I said really?? The phone is only 8 momths old with very little useage and it can't even run my apps! Weather /GPS forget about it, battery is dead in an hour.

He replied, That's just the way these phones are

I asked again is there anything you can do to fix it. No, sorry he replied, there's nothing wrong with ypur phone.

Meanwhile back at the farm, we've probably dropped well over 15 grand over the years

on iphones and assorted laptops, ipads ect ect You think they might throw me a new phone!

I guess I'll just have buy additional chargers so I can have one handy wherever I am

so I can spoon feed life into this overengineered flop.

patrickfromstamford, I had the same response at my Apple store!

I have had my iPhone since Sept 2014. Everything was fine until I upgraded to iOS 8. Now on iOS 8.2 and still getting the stupid battery drain issues.

Even though my phone use habits have not changed, I find I am having to now charge my phone twice a day. Even with moderate use my phone battery used to last most of the day, now it's dead by mid afternoon.

My cat likes to chew phone cables (and at £14 a time they're too expensive to chew) so I started charging my phone before bed and leaving it on airplane mode with nothing running on the phone. Battery barely lasts an 8 hour snooze. Friday just gone (27/03/2015) I went to sleep with phone on 100% battery, woke up 8.5 hours later with my battery on 2%. It drained 98% in under 9 hours with literally no usage whatsoever.

Went to my Apple store. They checked diagnostics, had a look over my phone. Their conclusion: nothing wrong with it. They were obsessing over my battery usage thingy. I said that would be okay but unless I am using my phone in my sleep then it draining 98% in 8.5 hours is NOT NORMAL. I argued with this guy for 20 minutes about how I am not so fussed about having to charge it more after using it but I can't see how they can claim so much battery usage when the phone is doing little more than existing is ordinary. He finally relented, closed all my apps, put my phone on airplane mode and we stood there for ten minutes. He thought there was going to be no difference in battery percentage but LO AND BEHOLD the battery life had depleted by a couple of % in ten minutes doing nothing.

So he said to restore my phone which should work but come back if not. That was saturday. I have started making a diary for my next visit to the apple store at the weekend. Last night I went to sleep at 11pm with battery on 80%, airplane mode on and all apps closed. Woke up at 6.10am, battery was on 17%. So a battery drain of 63% in 7 hours of doing nothing. Used phone briefly for ten mins (checked e-mails, responded to a couple of facebook comments) and by the time I got to work an hour later (7.10 am) the remaining 17% battery had completely depleted.

I wonder what their response this time will be!!

rachf87 I'm not surprised!

I was at a wedding Saturday afternoon that went well into the evening. Of course everyone has there phones out taking video's pictures Instagram Facebook ect ect, it was quite a phone event! I was asking everyone how there iphone 5 was (alot of people seem to have it) there were quite a few plugged in throughout the banquet hall, all I could do was laugh while looking at these pathetic struggling phones that couldn't make it through an important event...how sad actually.

Everyone I spoke to said the same exact thing........the batteries drain or better yet they suck!! Ok if it isn't the battery then it's the software or the structure of the phone itself.( Believe me, Apple knows there's a problem) One thing was very clear, no one is happy with the iphone 5. I'm switching back to my old iphone 4....it worked better, had better connectivity, better sound quality and a full charge would easily last 16 hours.

I guess gone are the days when Apple stands by there product and customer satisfaction is number one.

R.i.p. Steve Jobs

ps My daughter needed to borrow my charger so I turned my phone completely off last nite, yes as in all the way powered down to conserve my battery until morning. OFF!

It was at 68% when I shut it down around 10 last nite, This morning it's 100% dead. Will not even power up. The worst of it she took my charger to work! I have to go plug it in my car now.

At the very least Apple could give me a handful of extra chargers.

Try this and see if it helps. Try logging out of iCloud completely for a day or two and see if your battery life gets better. I had this issue and it helped tremendously. I think some people's phones, for some reason, are constantly hitting iCloud, even while asleep, and thus constantly using the battery. One pretty strong indication of this is if you look at the Usage and Standby times in the Battery Usage sections. If they are close in number of hours, then something is using the phone in the background constantly. Standby should, under most usage patterns, be far ahead of Usage. For example, my phone after about 6 hours of up time, showed 3 hours of Usage and 3 hours of Standby time. There was no way I was using the phone for 3 hours. Since logging out of iCloud, that 6 hours is now divided as 5 hours Standby and 1 hour of Usage.

To log out of iCloud, go to Settings > iCloud and at the bottom of the page tap on sign out of iCloud. Do that for a day or two to see how it goes.

Two things you should know (you may already) - 1. You will lose your iCloud backup at night, so if you back up to iCloud you may want to run it before you sign out. If you back up to iTunes on a computer, this will not be as much of an issue; 2. You will also lose Find My Phone. When you log out, it will ask you if you want to log out of Find My Phone. Say yes during your test. You can always log back in.

These thing worked for me. Instead of getting barely 7 hours of life from the phone with limited usage, I now get days of life with a lot heavier usage.

Anyway, hope these suggestions help if you try them.

Mar 31, 2015 12:36 PM in response to patrickfromstamford

Patrick, a new phone probably won't help. Mine had the same problem. Drained even when off. I got a new phone on 2 occasions and still had the issue. I also tried setting the new phone I received as a "new" phone (that is, I did not restore from a back up). Didn't work. I also tried the turning everything off (background refresh, location services, etc.). No success.

The ONLY thing that worked for me was signing out of iCloud in the settings. If you are going to try to exchange the phone, why not try signing out of iCloud to see if it helps? If it doesn't, you've lost nothing. Just make sure you do a backup if you want to restore if you are able to get the phone swapped.

Good luck!

Hey guys,

I thought I would tell you how did I solve this issue for my ill-working new iphone 5s.

The solution is simple - there is no solution!

But I got a new phone. Please read on to know how I did this.

I had this issue as soon as I installed the iOS 8, and probably if you are in the same boat as me you saw at least few of my questions about this issue all over the internet. For my last hope I was desperate to sell this iphone over ebay to non suspecting buyer (how evil of me), but I am glad I did not go this way. I went to apple resolution center and begged to change my phone, they could not do this, because the phone was out of warranty and bought abroad. Then I religiously called to apple call centers (the ones in United Kingdom where I bought my phone) and ask to acknowledge my problem, it took few days and a lot of chatting when they did see I am persistant to solve the issue. As soon as a consultant said I acknowledge your problem I was good to go. The manager of the team arranged a new phone to be shipped to my local Apple resolution center. It took no more than 3 days to get my phone replaced, and the battery life is so fantastic comparing to the previously had phone.

So, I was lost and hopeless with using the phone we paid so much to have, but with my persistence in solving problem I got out as a winner.

Hope this helps for you guys.
