Preferences error: Could not load preference pane

Many times, when I attempt to load a Preference Pane, I receive the error message: "Preferences Error: Could not load [X] preference pane.” Clicking “OK” and reopening the preference pane succeeds.

Does anyone know what's going on here? I upgraded to Yosemite from a Snow Leopard installation, which I assume is part of the problem.

You have some older preference panes that only work in 32-bit mode, so System Preferences must re-load in 32-bit mode to run those preference panes. Make sure that they have been updated for Yosemite. I know that Perian has not been updated since Snow Leopard and won't work with newer versions of OS X. Some users have reported that it caused issues for Mavericks and above.

There is no reason to have GateKeeper disabled. If you find the need to open an app that isn't from the AppStore and isn't signed, then simply right-click / control click on the app and select Open from the popup menu.

To fix this go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General tab, unlock the padlock if necessary and under "Allow apps downloaded from:" select at least "Mac App Store and identified developers."

The developer of EtreCheck says that you must re-install Yosemite to fix this. You can do that from the Recovery HD.

You appear to have accidentally installed some sort of adware. The fastest, most effective way to identify and optionally remove all currently known adware is by using AdwareMedic, developed by thomas_r. this Forum's malware guru, owner of TheSafeMac and a colleague of mine.

Hopefully you have some sort of backup plan in place because all hard drives will fail sooner or later, usually around the three year point, and normally very fast, so unless you have already replaced it you are overdue.

I'm aware; I haven't gone through those yet to see which ones still work (Diablotin does, for instance). But System Preferences isn't relaunching; it's merely failing to open a given prefpane on the first try. Still, it's worth a try to remove outdated prefpanes.

I got tired of having to very often do the "oops it failed to open; click ok, right click, choose "Open" dance. As I know what I download and install, I don't see the point of the computer informing me that a new app isn't signed.

Hmph. Seriously? This is a fresh installation of Yosemite on a bare drive, with a System Migration from my old Snow Leopard drive. Do you have a source for this?

I installed it to see if it was legit (these things sometimes are), then used AdwareMedic to uninstall. However, AdwareMedic does not seem to work, as this EtreCheck report was generated after I ran it. Serves me right for trusting something else to do my uninstalls for me, I guess.

GateKeeper does more than just tell you whether an app is signed or not. It checks the integrity of the file and validates those that are signed.

I have an e-mail in my inbox from the developer (EtreSoft) that says that. I've pushed back on that answer in a couple of forum postings, but he's sticking with that story. There must be an easier way if we knew the underlying problem. I've never observed it with my setup or I would attempt to first prove that was the case and try to figure out the root cause.

It is, of course, your choice, but this is one of the protections between you and potential malware. It's a shame to disable it unless truly necessary.

I'd also point out that you aren't as careful with your downloading as you think you are, or you never would have had jollywallet on your computer. That's adware, and it only gets on your Mac by downloading something from the wrong place that has a "hitchhiker" along for the ride.

Sounds like it may have been removed, then. If you don't see a Jollywallet item in the Extensions pane of Safari's preferences, then it's not installed.

I believe that EtreCheck may look in the caches and identify that a Safari extension is installed if found there. If that's what it's doing, what it's showing is a bit misleading, as that isn't actually installed and functional anymore if it doesn't show up in Safari's preferences. We'll have to wait for etresoft for clarification.

Not quite. It may have come along with some downloader, but I knew I was installing it. I thought I'd see what it was, and if it was legit. Nor did it bother me, except to put a bar at the top of some sites.

You got lucky. There's quite a lot of adware out there that would be significantly more difficult to remove than Jollywallet. If all adware was as simple as that, there would be no need for AdwareMedic. Some adware has been known to do things like embed itself inside the Firefox app and Firefox profile or get so deeply inserted into the system that incomplete removal can cause the system to crash and become unable to start back up again.

I'd definitely recommend not experimenting like this unless it's in a virtual machine (or other test system) or you're willing to accept the consequences if you download the wrong thing.

What's odd is that these errors only show up sometimes. Sometimes I'll restart and they will be absent.

There seems to be some confusion on this point. Your EtreCheck report shows a common pattern for people who are reporting problems with Yosemite. I think the first person to report it also reported that those failed entries went away after re-running the installer. Re-running the Yosemite installer is a harmless procedure. It would be best to have a backup before doing that regardless, but there is nothing wrong with having one of those. In (hopefully) every case since then, I have asked the poster to try a restart first before re-running the installer and report back with the results. I have had zero responses from those requests.

So, lacking any information or follow-up from the people reporting this problem, I released an update to EtreCheck that would be able to find out more information. I was actually able to do that before one of those posters replied to my earlier request, but at least he did reply eventually. He ran the updated EtreCheck and clicked on those new "Details" links for me. Now I know a bit more about all of those "failed" Apple entries. Yosemite is behaving as designed, but seems far more memory intensive than any previous version of the OS. If you re-run EtreCheck and click on those "Details" links next to the failed entries, you should see mostly something that looks like:

yada yada yada kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid #### [virtually every background process on machine]

A restart will definitely clear up those failed entries, but they will likely return. I don't know what is going on with your memory to cause such drastic action. The memorystatus_thead is not new, but it has never been this aggressive before. I'm still not 100% sure of what causes this. The system is supposed to handle virtual memory much more gracefully than that and only kill processes as a last resort. This is also the cause of the random logouts in Yosemite. I am beginning to think that Yosemite may require a minimum of 8 or 16 GB of RAM.

From this point forward, I would no longer recommend a reinstall of the operating system. It did help one person, but it was probably the required restart that actually cleared up those entries.

And to nit-pick, you most certainly do not have a fresh install of Yosemite. It doesn't matter if you run the installer from Snow Leopard or migrate from Snow Leopard, you have an upgrade Snow Leopard install. You have quite a few low-level system modifications that I think would be quite unsafe to run in Yosemite. So, ultimately, my recommendation to you would be not to just re-run the Yosemite installer, but to erase your hard drive and then do a true fresh install of Yosemite. Don't migrate anything except documents. Reinstall only the 3rd party software that is guaranteed, by its developer, to run properly in Yosemite.

I installed it to see if it was legit (these things sometimes are), then used AdwareMedic to uninstall. However, AdwareMedic does not seem to work, as this EtreCheck report was generated after I ran it. Serves me right for trusting something else to do my uninstalls for me, I guess.

…except JollyWallet is nowhere on my system, except in AdwareMedic logs. Why does EtreCheck think it is?

EtreCheck does still check the Safari extension cache folder. I am concerned that people would simply delete an extension via the Finder and assume, incorrectly, that it was uninstalled and no longer loaded. I am going to update EtreCheck to be more precise about what extensions are installed where, but Safari's settings for extensions are hidden, encrypted actually, so there is very little I can definitively say about them.

I use TimeMachineScheduler; this Mac is so slow as to be almost unusable while Time Machine is running.

That would be one of the things I suggest not reinstalling. You shouldn't even notice when Time Machine is running. If you do, that indicates a problem elsewhere. You should correct the problem rather than hide the symptom.

Dec 13, 2014 11:22 PM in response to etresoft

That does indeed seem to be what's happening. It's in and out.

Don't migrate anything except documents. Reinstall only the 3rd party software that is guaranteed, by its developer, to run properly in Yosemite.

That is probably a good idea, especially now that it seems that I can't drag files! I can drag windows, select text, etc., but my files and folders won't move, even after a restart. I just wish it wasn't such a royal pain to do. Whatever happened to Archive & Install??

And how do I just migrate documents anyway? IIRC, the Migration Assistant will not move anything less than my entire home folder. Am I to be reduced to dragging what files I need from the Time Capsule?

I can't speak for EtreSoft, but what most people mean when they say migrate documents only, they do mean dragging documents, Music, Pictures, Mail, etc. from backup. There normally isn't a lot that can get you in trouble in your home folder but it's always a possibility. Any software that wasn't installed for all users could have deposited cruft in your home/Library/. What I have done is checked the usual suspects (LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, Applications Support, Frameworks, InputManagers, Internet Plug-Ins) to make sure they are all still needed, up-to-date and OS X version compatible.

Archive and Install? That was useful, wasn't it. I think the problem these days is that Apple only thinks about itself. If you use any non-Apple software or any non-Mac App Store software, then you are on your own.

MIgrating just your home folder is what I was talking about. It will certainly bring over a lot of hidden orphan files, but ther is no way around that. It could also bring over some partial software installations. But since they are restricted to your home folder, they are relatively easy to remove. It would probably be a good idea to keep a separate administrator account on your machine as a fallback In case your account has problems.

Well, I did a simple (dirty) reinstall of Yosemite, and it seems to have fixed all three of my problems (System Preferences errors, non-draggability of files, and EtreCheck-reported LaunchAgent errors)--for now, at least. I intend to do a clean install of Yosemite on another drive in order to see what files are actually installed by Apple so I can see what to keep and what to get rid of in my own Library folder.

There should be an easier way to do this. Apple-installed files in the Library folder should be clearly marked as such.

Actually the problem seems vastly less in Yosemite than it was in Leopard and Snow Leopard, so perhaps I should just turn Time Machine back on as you suggest.
