Airport problems after update

I have been using my 20" Intel iMac for a few months now and have had no problems getting the built-in airport device to connect to my wireless home network. Yesterday, I downloaded and installed the new airport system update, and ever since I've been having big trouble. It doesn't show any available network connection at all (and I know my wireles network is working because my laptop can still connect). If I restart the computer, sometimes it will find my network and sign on, but then it drops the connection after just a few minutes and goes back to saying it can't detect any available networks. Has anyone else had any problems since the new update? Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

I had the same problem last night only it was with my daughter's HP notebook. I just got my iMac a week a ago and had to start from the ground up getting it on my wireless network. I have a Linksys wireless router- model WRT54G, a Hp desktop computer, and as mentioned before the Hp notebook. The culprit ended up being a 2.4ghz phone that was interfering with the wireless connection. Connections were constantly being dropped and scanning for a network sometimes yeilded "no networks in range." I decided to use the ethernet port to connect the iMac along with the pc. I use Comcast as an ISP. Before I found out it was the phone I started from scratch with all the computers and the router. I reset the router- changed all the settings on the computers and the iMac to manually configured ip addresses, numbering them sequentially so I wouldn't get confused, and pointed them to the default routers gateway. Comcast has two DNS server addresses it uses where I'm at, so I plugged them in as well. I logged in to the router setup as admin since I had reset the router and started setting up the network. On the basic setup tab I enabled the automatic configuration (DHCP) for internet connection type, next I disabled DHCP for network router settings since I manually configured each machines ip address. For the wireless setup I use mixed mode since I connect a PSP to the network sometimes and it's 802.1b. For wireless security I use WPA-personal (TKIP) and enabled the ssid broadcast. I made sure the channel for the router matched the channel on the notebooks network card. In the advanced wireless settings I disabled Secure easy setup as this caused me problems in the past. In the administration tab I changed the password and exited. I forgot to mention that you have to save the settings on each tab or it will lose them if you go to another tab without saving them first. After restarting every machine it worked perfect- until the notebook dropped it's connection I was frustrated and got ready to start over again, and then on a hunch. I had my son get off the cordless phone. Needless to say it came right back up soon as he switced to the corded phone in the kitchen. Needless to say I'm upgrading the phones to 5.8ghz this weekend. As in the case of the notebook- when I was using Airport on the iMac the connection was dropping out as well. Hope this might help.

20" iMac ICD2 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This worked for me as I changed to manual IP in my TCP/IP.

The very weird thing is that I fixed the automatic connecting problem after a few days when I updated to 10.4.8. All of the weeks after the automatic connotation worked and all of a sudden on Tuesday it just didn't work anymore. Unfortunately I've forgotten what I did to make it work in the first place. So I had to look back to messages that were made in late September and October. WHAT A PAIN.

I just tried about every suggestion up above and none of them worked, except for manually setting my IP in the TCP/IP.

Bryan,

I tried your suggestion also with success, but I enjoyed the wireless connection for one day. Same troubles and i lost also appletalk so I had to recheck that option also, otherwise the laserprinter is not found in the network. I also ran the combo updater to be sure, at first with positive results but while writing i had to choose the airport manually again, all settings lost. Somehow these prefs get corrupt somewhere. Im going to fetch my LAN cable again. 😟

I can't believe it - after weeks of frustration, and after having tried so many different solutions that users have posted, I finally found one that works!

I spent hours on the phone with Apple and with Dlink, both of whom got me nowhere and seemed to have no idea that the intel Macs and airport cards were deadly slow (with OSX 10.4.8).

I could download files quickly, but any browsing I did was about as slow as a phone modem or worse, in terms of viewing web pages.

But now that I ditched my system configuration folder and set up my network again and rebooted - I'm whipping along!

Thanks so much for the advice - it made a massive difference. Why doesn't apple do something about this?

I've also noticed some other programs seem to work much faster for me than they used to - not sure if it's a coincidence.

Anyway, this is my first time posting, but I figured I couldn't have fixed it without this forum, so the least I can do is tell everyone that this particular fix worked for me!

Thanks!

Things seem to be going from bad to worse. Lately I've been losing the airport signal alltogether, then when I try to reconnect sometimes it loses it again. Sometimes is says it has full strenght connection, but there is no internet connection. I have to turn off airport then back on. I'm at a loss. I have to call apple, but don't have time until after my upcoming finals... They need to know what is going on with these computers.

I wish I had some insight for you, but my problems were all related to the OS-X download, not anything to do with AirPort.

I found the solution to my problem by googling it (which led me to several articles in Mac-related publications), so maybe if you google "losing connection to AirPort", something helpful will pop up. I tried to find answers through the discussion boards for over a month before trying Google, but I will definitely google first from now on.

Good luck -- with AirPort and with your finals.

This topic has not been addressed since Nov. Have there been any updates?

I am having this problem with a Macbook Pro. On boot, it finds our wireless network and then immediately loses it. When I select our network from the dropdown it asks for the WPA password. I enter it and then it says the network cannot be found.

The only thing that works is to zap the PRAM. Once it boots from zapping it finds the network successfully and connects. But a few days later the same thing happens. This is ridiculous! I have 4 others Macs on the network and they are having no problems.

d33znutz,
Two weeks ago there was a software update:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportupdate2006002.html

This thread about Intel-based iMacs may not have been updated recently, however this issue is addressed every day in other Intel iMac threads. For these iMacs, there is apparently a different issue for the Core Duo and for the Core 2 Duo. It is my understanding that the MacBook Pro issue has been different from either of these iMac issues. Hope the above update works for you. If not, calling Apple for repair support seems to be the best hope of resolution at this point, as they are able to talk some through a fix that works.

I'm also experiencing lots of problems with the Airport connection on my new iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo. Using 10.4.8 aswell. It is curious because on my PowerBook G4 who is right next to me the connection works flawlessly and is always ready to be used when I open the powerbook.

On the iMac, the connection drops at random. Tried many of the possible solutions available on the web (doing a massive search everywhere) but none works. The last one I am trying is to get rid of DHCP and put everything manual, ip, submask, everything. Lets see if it holds a few days if only...

10.4.9 anytime soon please?

leogirl-
I just finished reading all of the posts from way back in October. Like many others I have had similar problems with my Airport connection dropping out which started after installing the 10.4.8 update. I have not attempted re-installing the Combo 10.4.8 download from Apple's site yet. Are you still trouble free re: airport drop-outs?
