Safari spinning wheel

iMac OSX 10.7.5

For a year now, Safari stops working and you get a spinning wheel of death.

When it does this, there is no internet activity at all, and Safari jumps from 15% of CPU usage to 60 or 70% of CPU usage. All other applications work fine, so I can go off and do something else. But Safari will freeze for two minutes. (There is plenty of CPU and disk space - normally about 50% free.)

In frustration I went to Firefox. But I do not always like that browser, so I came back to Safari - and all was well. Hooray!!

Alas, we are now back to 2-minute pauses every five minutes, while Safari sits and thinks.

I have come down to only one page with two tabs open, and it still does it.

Grrrrr.

Thanks for that. nice little App.

I ran it in normal mode, and then I ran it again when Safari froze up. The two reports are below.

You seem to have an old version of EtreCheck. I have made a couple of updates over the past couple of days. That is extension is probably only partially installed. The current version of EtreCheck would flag this as "Cached".

You can manually delete this in the Finder. Go to the "Go" menu, hold down the option key, and choose "Library". Open the "Caches" folder. Then find the "com.apple.Safari" folder and open that. Now open the "Extensions" folder. You should see an "Omnibus.safariextension" folder that you can delete.

Unfortunately, Safari is a tightly closed system. Even the preferences for extensions are stored encrypted in the keychain. The only guaranteed way to remove an extension is to do it through Safari's Preferences. I continue to flag these partially removed extensions in EtreCheck so that people know something is partially removed. Because I don't control Safari or have any insight into it, I can't guarantee that a "Cached" extension will not be loaded. Perhaps Apple releases some minor update to Safari and it causes these cached extension to get loaded again. I don't know. That is why EtreCheck just reports the facts and makes no assumptions about what Apple is going to do internally.

Thanks Etresoft.

Unfortunately I have been banned from this thread for some reason. It just says:

"Access to this place or content is restricted."

.

I am contacting you via your personal details page, which had a link to your last posting. I have uploaded a new question, but that appears to have gone missing too - it was called "Safari - Spinning Wheel Freeze." I cannot find it, this morning. And I could not find Linc Davis, the other contributor, anywhere on this site.

Regards other plug-ins I could delete.

Sunflower Audio drives my headphones, so I don't really want to get rid of that.

VPN I did get rid of, but because I have three Library folders, it is difficult to know if this was really successful. Unfortunately you cannot do a 'file-search' inside Library folders, so you don't know if it is gone or not. You have to look through each folder. How can I do a search of a Library folder? (The search function drops out of 'Library' as soon as you search.)

And trying to find my additional Library folders is a pain, because they normally don't show up. I have three Library folders, and they are on:

1. >Hardisk >Library.

2. >Hardisk >Systems >Library.

3. >Hardisk >User >Library

No3 is the primary Library folder, but 2 and three do seem to be used.

P.S. Ha - by accessing through your personal page, I am now back into the thread. The original message said:

Are you sure about that, Linc?

The DivX Plug-in was not mentioned in Extensions, but is was still installed. The program was in Applications, with a little plug-in thingy in my No2 Library folder.

Butwhen I go to >Safari >Preferences >Security it is still mentioned there, even though I think I have deleted it all. How do I delete DivX from >Security ?? Is a little bit still hanging around somewhere, in my Library folders?
