iMac 24 inch Late 2006 VERY SLOW!!!

My iMac 24 inch Late 2006 running OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) is very slow at times. A reboot helps but after a few hours of web browsing and it starts to crawl. Crawl as in clicks don't get a response till 10-20 seconds later. I'm unable to edit any movies in iMovie cause it's just so painfully slow. iMovie can barely load everything up let alone start editing. I haven't tried iMovie in several months because of it. Is there a way to check for viruses on macs? Is there such a thing as a virus on macs? or is there a way to check what the heck is slowing it down? tips and suggestions are gladly welcome. thanks

The way memory works with OS X, now, the OS, itself, doesn't have enough working RAM overhead much less extra overhead RAM for something that is CPU, GPU, RAM and storage intensive app like iMovie.

If you can find it, I still use iMovie '06 HD on my IMac running both OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard AND OS X 10.9.4/5 Mavericks.

This version of iMovie may even work better on OS X 10.7 Lion.

It uses less processing overhead than the more current, and in my opinion, dumbed down versions of iMOvie.

aside from iMovie. Why does the computer slow to a crawl after being up for few hours to a couple days. I used to be able to leave the computer on for weeks without any issues on speed. I did restart when I noticed it had been running for some time without a restart. When it slows…I'll have to take a peek at the Activity Monitor and post back.

Is your Epson printer still kicking back low ink messages to your Mac?

If your printer is not working because of a constant low ink warnings, these messages could be building up in your processes slowing your Mac down.

If you are unable to use your printer currently because it dOes not have enough ink in it, the best thing yoU can do is to turn the printer off and disconnect its USB cable until you can get it running, again.

Also,

You need to make sure ALL of your installled software that you use (iMovie, aside) is all up to date and compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion.

Also, you need to make sure all of your web browser plugins and extensions are up to date.

Another issue maybe that Apple bundles versions of the Safari web browser with each no iteration/upgrade of OS X.

There is no way to update/upgrade Safari on its own.

So, your version of Safari may be out of date.

Try searching for, downloading and install Mozilla Firefox, instead.

Mozilla FireFox is a stand alone web browser that can be easily updated without updating your OS X, which you cannot do with your year and model IMac.

Mozilla FireFox is very good and stable on OS X and the Mozilla group constantly issues FireFox updates that you can easily update to.
