iMac 5K spontaneously restarts after sleep

My iMac 27" Retina 5K (late 2014) (OS 10.10.1) spontaneously restarts after sleep, and displays the error message, "A graphics problem has been detected. Click Report to submit to Apple."

An Apple senior advisor ran it through various tests including OS reinstall and decided to replace the computer. The problem did not occur with the replaced iMac for about 2 weeks, but now it's doing the same problematic behavior. BTW, I haven't downloaded any new software since receiving the replaced iMac.

I see from other threads that others are getting the same "graphics problem" error message, but I haven't seen anyone else mention the concomitant spontaneously restarts after sleep. Does this behavior sound familiar to anyone else?

More of an FYI, I'm about to get my 2nd replacement (they are blaming a faulty GPU), but I was advised if I took the machine to the Genius Bar or had a rep come to me to repair the GPU, then I would no longer be able to request a new machine. Instead, we would have to keep troubleshooting the existing machine. So, I declined the option to try and fix the specific component and will get my 3rd machine.

After going through a couple of iMac 5K and sending in data. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue with the 295 Graphics card. I finally gave up and returned it. Keeping it with a hardware issues would just be a pain later on when they finally announce issues with the AMD GPU(in my opinion). I just went ahead and ordered a regular iMac with the Nvidia card and sometime down the line when they resolve the issue the upgrade to 5K will return.

Sure enough after 4 days of working flawlessly I got the "Sleep wake failure experienced a problem".

Strange to learn about your experience with wireless enabled/disabled. I've had wi-fi and bluetooth enabled all along and neither has been identified as problematic, according to the data captures analyzed by Apple.

It's been a week since Apple replaced my power supply and cord, and since then I haven't had any spontaneous restarts. Fingers crossed.

Mar 15, 2015 8:27 AM in response to Craig ZB

Craig, Turbo, et al,

I'm having the same problem, but I don't have the 295 GPU. I still have my old 27" iMac as well, with a nearly identical software setup, yet it's rock-solid and has been for 5 years.

My Retina iMac hardware setup is slightly different: I have a USB hub plugged in.

I've been following this thread (lurking) for several months. I've also done some serious Google-fu searches in search of a solution. Nothing.

So here I am, adding to the thread.

I'll try unplugging my USB hub, but this is getting ridiculous.

Time to call Apple support and browbeat them into fixing or replacing my machine.

Mar 15, 2015 10:01 AM in response to spijtebijt

Spijtebijt, do you think it matters whether the Apple wired keyboard is extended (with number keypad) or not?

Apple's now replaced the iMac and extended keyboard once, then the power supply, then the logic board (which has the graphics card and processor on it) and I still get spontaneous restarts. They're about to replace the entire iMac for a second time.

I'll try using an older Apple keyboard and see if the problem persists.

Hi I have the same problem my mac was already fiexd once by Apple - they said it was hard disk problem and replace it - but that didn't fix the problem

I'm still getting this reports

I had basically lost all hope in resolving this problem without getting a new computer.

Last night though, instead of shutting down, I pulled the USB cable for the keyboard and put my computer to sleep.

This morning it was still sleeping and no restarts!

This is the first time I've used sleep without a restart since I got the iMac 6 months ago.

I will try it out for a few consecutive nights and let you know if the keyboard is the problem or if it was just a positive glitch 🙂

Jun 1, 2015 4:16 PM in response to Craig ZB

I'm experiencing the same issue.

1 month old iMac 5K 32GB RAM, 3 TB HD, 295 GPU, max resolution enabled

I have 4 users created and whenever we are all done we go to the login window so someone else can use the computer.

When we leave it overnight, and sometimes during the day; or when we put the computer to sleep, it will wake up with a fresh reboot.

This is extremely bad as I leave lots of applications open and the desktop "just the way I wanted" with all the work that I have and it's all lost or scrambled when I login again.

I do not have anything plugged to the computer, just the default keyboard and pad.

No USB peripherals connected whatsoever.

I also have minimal software installed as this is the "family" laptop as opposed to my main computer.

I have Office 2015 preview; Evernote, SimpleNote, PopClip, Fantastical, Air Mail 2.

Quite frustrating.
