How much memory required for iOS 8 installed through iTunes?

Hello all,

I bought a new iPhone 4s, which has iOS 7.0 on it. Perusing the apps available on the App Store, the Find My iPhone sounds like a good thing to have, but it requires iOS 8. When I tried to install iOS 8 over WiFi, the installer said it needed 5.3GB, while my new iPhone, having only a few contacts and one photo, has only 4.9 GB free. I've read that when installed through iTunes instead of over WiFi direct to the iPhone, the install uses less space.

How much space can I expect to have left on an 8GB iPhone 4s after installing iOS 8.1.2?

Are there extra apps that come with iOS 8 that I can delete to save some space?

Are the headaches I've read about regarding iOS 8 on a 4s still an issue with 8.1.2?

Why would Apple not provide the version of Find My iPHone that works with the version of the iPhone making the request?

Not as much as it does to update over the air.

Plug your phone to iTunes and update.

No it does not, it was introduced with IOS 5.

If you have IOS 7 you already have it, no download required.

Find my phone doesn't require iOS 8 but you can update the OS if you want.

As for downloading use iTunes. I don't know how much space you'll need but it's considerably smaller than over wifi. When you try to install it it'll likely tell you how much space it needs.

The apps that come with the OS cannot be deleted.

The vast majority of 4S owners do not have any issues with iOS 8. Out of the millions installed very few come here just to say they don't have a problem.

Given that the phone has 8GB of storage, but only 4.9GB free, right out of the box, and the fact that the iOS 8.1.2 installer wants 5.3GB available, I am guessing iOS 8.1.2 does not leave much storage for anything else.

You guess wrong.

About 1.2GB is required (if you go via iTunes, and let the download/decompression stage happen on the computer)
