iTunes will not import CDs, or play them

I have an original Titanium Powerbook. I have iTunes 7 on it. I am having a very difficult getting CDs to import or play, lately.
The CD says it is importing, but never advances.
The last CD that I tried to import, I dbl-clicked on another song that was already in my library, and then clicked on one of the songs on the CD. For some reason, this worked. It has not worked for this latest CD. I click the 'play' button and then the spinning beachball of death starts to run and I have to force-quit.
Any ideas?
PLEASE HELP!

I also have a TiBook. On 10.4.8, iTunes 7.0.2, and I've been having the problem of iTunes freezing when importing or playing a CD for quite a while. Mine freezes immediately upon trying to import or play a track.

Here's what I can add. If I do a repair permissions on the boot drive (not the CD, of course) after the CD is mounted, then I can launch iTunes and play/import the CD. If I eject the CD and reinsert it, or insert another, I have to run the repair permissions again. It doesn't matter if the repair permissions process finds nothing to repair, just running the process causes the problem to go away, making me suspect that disk manager is getting involved.

I've sent this info to Apple via iTunes feedback. Let's hope it triggers a neural impulse somewhere and leads to a solution.
