Does Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter output sound?

I am using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, like this one:

with my Macbook Pro 17-inch, Mid 2010.

I also happen to have a DVI to HDMI cable that I tried to connect to my Samsung LED TV (2014 yr.)

The picture that I get on TV from the screen mirroring from the Mac is great but I don't have any sound. So I'm curious if DVI could be killing the sound in this case? Any ideas?

I don't think the DVI standard carries sound, so while Mini DisplayPort can handle audio, DVI probably won't carry it any further.

Does your TV have an unused HDMI port? MacBook Pros after a certain version do send audio out of Mini DisplayPort and the audio can be carried through HDMI to a TV or receiver. HDMI would be preferred over DVI for this reason, unless your MacBook Pro is too old. If it is, then with either type of connection you would need a separate audio cable connecting the audio-out on the MacBook Pro to an audio-in on the TV.
