Code 128 is a very high density alphanumeric bar code. The symbol can be as long as necessary to store the encoded data. It is designed to encode all 128 ASCII characters, and will use the least amount of space for data of 6 characters or more of any 1-D symbology.

Each data character encoded in a Code 128 symbol is made up of 11 black or white modules. The stop character, however, is made up of 13 modules. Three bars and three spaces are formed out of these 11 modules. Bar and spaces can vary between 1 and 4 modules wide.

The symbol includes a quiet zone (10 x-dimensions), a start character, the encoded data, a check character, the stop character, and a trailing quiet zone (10 x-dimensions). For optimum hand-scanning with a contact reader, the quiet zone should be at least 0.25 inches.

For labels in an open system, the minimum x-dimension is 7.5 mils. The minimum bar height is 15 percent of the symbol length or 0.25 inches, whichever is greater

Hello , Somebody please help me with this very complicated question.

- I would like to generate a barcode in Illustrator CS (with a plugin that can generate my code 128)The plugin is totaly reachable by applescript.
- Then I need to check the codes and I have to generate all unique codes... The only way to automate this procces is applescript.
for example MR125333 IS THE STARTPOINT , MR125334 is the end
and this must be send by applescript to illustrator plugin.
- Then I need to place the unique barcodes on a PDF and send all (unique)records to a production printer (LPR) This I can do on several methodes. But important is that illustrator can generate all .eps files from each unique barcode.

Does anyone can help me - even a part.... So I can test several methodes...

Hello Collin,

Although I neither am sure I understood your questions nor have any solution for it, I think you should give a bit more detailed depiction of your objectives and measures.

I guess your questions consist of three parts:
(1) How to generate unique code (sequence of alphanumeric characters).
(2) How to convert the code to Code 128 pattern.
(3) How to edit an existing PDF so that it contains generated Code 128 pattern, that is given in a separate EPS file, at predefined position of certain page.

Are these presumptions correct?

Assuming they are correct:
As for (1), you need to supply the exact convention code must hold to, such as its length, numbering scheme etc. If I'm not much mistaken, only this part would be doable by plain AppleScript without using dedicated application.

As for (2), you need to supply the detailed information about the said plug-in for Illustrator CS, such as its name, version, developer etc. If it is scriptable then someone may be able to provide a sample script to convert given character sequence to Code 128 pattern.

As for (3), you need to supply the information about applications at hand that can edit PDF file freely such that it lets you import EPS image and place it at coordinate {X, Y} of page N of original PDF file. I guess Acrobat Professional will surely be able to do such things, but I don't have it and don't know how to accomplish such task by its scripting.

Lastly, you may (or may not) get more precise advice from Adobe's own support fora or support programs, for you questions seem to be very application-specific and professional-oriented.

Hello Hiroto,

Youre presumptions are correct. I have to do all these things. And I hear from several software developpers that it isn't easy and untill now anyone can help me with this question. It seems that there isn't software that can do this. ( We are using some very expensive software and they can't do the job)
Altough I know applescript can give me the solution.
Monday I will hear more from 2 other chanels I also have asked to find a solution. Thanks for your suggestions.

I will do the sesearch for the plugin. They have told me that's it's scriptable by applescript. Have to do alot these days 🙂 untill next time 🙂
