Garageband simply not recording

I downloaded the new garageband and for some reason no matter what i do it just won't record? like it isn't just that it's not picking up sound, even when i click the red record button absolutely nothing happens. I made sure inbuilt mic was selected in preferences. Sound is also working fine everywhere else on my computer so i'm really confused as to what could be the problem. Thanks to anyone who offers some help.

Just to be sure, check the obvious place again.

  • Select the audio track you want to record to.
  • Check Track > Track header > Show Record enable. Enable it, if it is not already enabled.
  • Check all other tracks, if one of them is soloed. Disable the solo flag on all other tracks.
  • Launch "Audio Midi Setup" from Applications > Utilities and check the input settings there.

You have selected the internal mic in the Preferences, but check also the Info for the Track in the Smart Controls. What is the "Input" setting in the "recording" brick?

Have you already tried to restart the Mac, if it will not record? Are you running Yosemite on your Mac? I noticed since upgrading to Yosemite that there seems to be a problem with the Core Audio, and sometimes recording will not work, but restarting the system usually brings the ability to record back.
