SaveOnMac adverts

I use an iMac and run OS X 10.9.5. I have McAfee Live Safe.

Suddenly I started getting SaveOnMac adverts all over my browser pages (Safari and Google Chrome), including video/audio ads that I couldn't close. I haven't been on any weird sites, nor have I clicked anything strange, they simply started and won't stop.

I seem to have cured it on Safari by going to Safari Preferences -> Extensions and instructing it to uninstall SaveOnMac. However, I'm still getting the problem on Google Chrome. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can make sure it doesn't come back to Safari and how I can get rid of it from Google Chrome?

A friend suggested that the SaveOnMac malware might be in my Applications folder. However, it isn't. Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Get rid of McAfee Site Advisor. It is capable of nothing beneficial and is only likely to cause problems. Be sure to follow its instructions and do not use any so-called "cleaner" or "zapper" type apps to eradicate it.

Adware works through deception. The only way to avoid it is to recognize its appearance so that you do not install it again. To learn how to recognize adware readHow to install adware.

One of the worst things you can do on a Mac is to treat it as a MS Windows machines that requires anti-virus, cleaning, performance enhancing etc.. apps. OS X does NOT require antivirus apps, cleaning apps, etc. In most cases installing such apps on a Mac will create more problems than they solve. I strongly recommend that you the developers uninstall instructions and uninstall the antivirus app. To keep your Mac safe and secure the best thing you can do is to open the Mac App Store - Updates and install all recommended updates.

If you continue to get pop up add then use an extension for your browser to block ads. On Safari I recommend using AdBlock which can be located by clickgin Safari - Preferences - Extensions - Add Extensions - AdBlock.

Thank you for the advice/information. My iMac has no extraneous apps, except for the McAfee, and the last time I spoke to an Apple advisor about it he said it would do no harm.

I shall continue to monitor the situation here. At present things seem okay.

Suite yourself however look through these forums and you will find that:

1. Using antivirus apps on a Mac will likely cause problems.

2. The most common message from experienced users is to uninstall antivirus apps.
