How do i delete songs/podcasts off my ipod in itunes 12.1

Since the upgrade, I cannot see how I can delete songs or podcasts off my ipod. I will run out of memory very quickly. If I put in delete songs into Help it says select and press backspace. This does not work.

Howdy richarddu7,

You choose what to sync to your iPod and what is not selected to sync is effectively removed from the iPod.

Sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod with iTunes using USB - Apple Support

You'll need to sync each time you want to add, update, or remove content from your device. You can change your sync options at any time.

Please make sure what you don't want on your iPod is not selected to sync.

Take care,

Thank you very much for your help. Actually, I just found another solution. I checked the box at the bottom of the Summary page which says Manually manage music and videos. I then clicked Apply and after that, I was able to delete content.

Why are neither of these solutions available when you query Help?

Perhaps one of the highly paid help in Apple could tell me (and all the others who have commented) what benefits we are getting from the upgrade to 12.1. It just seems to have made it less user friendly and more difficult to use.

I strongly agree. Apple needs to create searchable online user manuals which they update along with the constant upgrades that they so insist on. Even trying to articulate my questions for all of these itsy bitsy convoluted esoteric functions, then go online and post them, then hope someone answers -- it's a a ridiculous time waste and imposition, not to mention the disappointment and annoyance of waiting an unknown length of time for an answer. And to search for an answer that's already been posted requires sorting through countless variations of devices and models with similar problems to whatever I'm trying to figure out -- but not necessarily the same problem. In electronics the tiniest thing is enough to keep the solution from working. And Apple your product support doesn't work. Right now you're a monopoly who knows you can get by with horrendous customer service. I hope that somehow changes from within you or without you.
