Old ipod won't connect to Windows 8.1 PC

I have this really old ipod (Serial No: YM64771KV8T) which appears to be working just fine.

The Problem is that when I connect it to my Windows 8.1 laptop it starts charging but I get an error saying the last USB device was not recognised by the computer. I've tried pretty much everything to solve the problem by updating itunes and what not, but it still won't work.

Does anyone have any further ideas?
