Caller ID shows "Unknown"

I'm using an iPhone 6, with the latest software 8.1.2. My carrier is AT&T. I never had this issue up until about 2 weeks ago. Every now and then the caller ID shows "Unknown" when I receive a call. Sometimes even if they are in my contacts list, but not always. Before it didn't matter if they were in my contacts or not it would still display the 10 digit phone number. I called AT&T after reading on here it's on the carrier's end of things. The agent checked all my settings on my account on AT&T's end and said everything looks good, but he did ping my phone. I checked it by messeging a couple of my contacts and had them call me and their ID's came up, but they are using cell phones, I just tried from by business land line and "Unknown" showed, so did Unknown show from my Mother's land line, it seems that any land lines are not showing up on caller ID, even before if they weren't in my contacts the number would still show up.

Interesting thread. I haven't knowingly personally experienced VoLTE calls, especially not from VoIP telephones. It's interesting as well that since these calls do not use the standard wireless voice method, it appears as if they don't even show up on your wireless phone bill as calls.

The other responders clearly have a lot more experience with this than I do right now. I've certainly learned a lot here.

We are having the same issue. I was able to correct the outbound Caller ID formatting on my Cisco PBX by routing it through an Asterisk PBX first, then on to the Cisco PRI gateways. The problem appears to be (in our case) how Cisco presents it's caller ID as a Private Branch Exchange over the PRIs. The Asterisk PBX "simplifies" the CallerID and formats the CNAM and CLID correctly before presenting the CNAM and CLID to the ATT PRI. I also noticed that if I send the Call out a CenturyTel PRI that the Caller ID works fine when presented from a Cisco Call Manager.

I had this problem with my new iPhone 6 Plus. Calls from many known callers showed up as "Unknown" on the 6 Plus even though they showed up properly identified on my spouse's iPhone 6 Plus. Problem was solved when I asked Verizon to discontinue "LTE Calling" on my account. This is not a setting that can be accessed on the phone or on the Verizon website. You must ask one of their customer reps to do this on your account.
