Screen corruption

I posted this question in the Yosemite forum, but thought I'd try here as it may be specific to the Mac Mini.

I have a 2014 Mac Mini running Yosemite. Occasionally the screen gets corrupted, and I have to sleep the computer and wake it again to correct it. Anyone else see this issue?

I posted yesterday to: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI that I see the distortion when I wake the my 2014 Mini from sleep. (I have an LCD VGA monitor connected to the Mini using a VGA to mini display port adapter.) To get it to display properly, I have to either put it to sleep again and wake it up, logout and login, or unplug the display port adapter and plug it back in. The monitor doesn't have this problem when connected to my old MacBook Pro.

I have the same issue guys. My Mac mini 2014 is connected to a HDTV (Panasonic Plasma) via HDMI 1.4.

It happens on random, but only after waking from sleep (or deep sleep). I'd say 1 in a 20 wake-ups.

Since it's so darn unpredictable I'm hesitant to send it back for service (I don't think they will test it that extensively to catch the problem). They will probably blame it on the bad cable (I tested with a couple), TV or bad luck 🙂

What I noticed, and what is interesting is that when I go into color profiles and poke around (change to Adobe RGB for example), it switches back to normal. Rebooting and upluging HDMI cable does the trick as well.

It makes me wonder whether the color profiles that Mac assigns to the TV are corrupted.

Any advice would be appreciated guys. Photos below.

Something to try...

I couldn't get a direct link to work. Don't know why. A user tried some things as advised by Apple support. It was posted (May 6, 2015 @5:52 AM) in this thread -- Re: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI-- on page 15 by user -- warrenFS.

His/Her post:

"Same problem with new 2014 mini (OS 10.10.3) <> Asus MX. Called Apple support and this OS fix from Kieran worked.

From OS Library, trash

- /Library/Caches

- /Library/Launchagents

- /Library/Launchdaemons

From user library (hidden in Yosemite(!) - requiring you to select Go and hold cmd to reveal it in dropdown menu); trash

- ~/Library/Caches

- ~/Library/Launchagents

Restart with an SMC reset. Empty Trash. Voila.

Its worked for me with 2 test Sleeps from dropdown.

Not tried it overnight yet but its looking very hopeful...

unless I have to go through the process every day!"

I'm not sure if the latest update has fixed the issue. I've discovered that I can avoid it by not sleeping the computer, only the display. As soon as I switched "allow computer to sleep" to "never", I have not experienced the corrupt display again. This means that while the display sleeps, my Mac Mini never sleeps. Power draw is pretty low on a Mac Mini, so I'm not too concerned with it never sleeping. I would like it though if Apple fixed this bug.

I just bought my Mac Mini on Saturday and it has the sleep/wake issue. It also has the distorted image issue. We have 2 monitors, one connected by HDMI and one connected by VGA with adaptor. The HDMI has the sleep/wake issue but the other doesn't. Both have the distorted image after sleep issue. I found that if you go into Displays in the system preferences and click on the "colors" button, the display goes back to normal. Guess I'll add my complaint to the list at Apple Support.

FWIW, I had a late 2014 mini with 10.10.2 installed. I bought it subsequent to my reading of this thread. Maybe it wouldn't happen to me.......it did. After waking from 'deep' sleep my display would sporadically show static and image corruption. My connection was from mini out -- Apple HDMI to DVI adapter to DVI.

The rep said there were no special handling notifications on her list regarding the mini and this issue. I did point her to this thread and told her I think it looks to be an Apple software issue. She suggested a PRAM and SMC reset, and lastly, to go to an Apple store for diagnostics.

Whereas I had only one day before my return window closed, I chose to return it. I'll also provide feedback to Apple at the appropriate address and point to this thread.

I hope they fix things soon for everyone. Good luck.

Hi Rob, all,

well, I had the exact same problem (funky colors) with a Mac Mini bought last week. Now that I see so many people experiencing the same issue (plus the "my HDMI monitor won't wake up") I think I'm not buying this again. Mine is on its way to Amazon.es (I'm from Spain) aftersales center and better will save the momey for the next model or some other stuff. Proud owner of a 2008 MacBook (whose display went to **** after 5-6 year), I'm really disappointed with Apple at the moment.

Cheers,

Juan.

While I agree that this seems to be a defect, I've not been motivated to return my mac to Apple as with mine it only seems to be an occasional problem waking from computer sleep. I've just set my Mac to never sleep, only the display will sleep. The difference in power draw between computer sleep and sitting idle is less than 10 watts, so unless the spinning disk bothers you, really not much is gained with sleeping the computer. And just waking the display is faster than waking the computer and display.
