itunes playback skips. since updating to 12.1

After updating, which I put off as long as I could, my itunes player starts skipping, and crackling during playback of most

songs in my library. It is annoying. Does not do this with Microsoft Media Player. Itunes is my default player. I have heard that

if I uninstall and then reinstall itunes, it will fix the problem. But I am afraid I will lose some of my music. I am backing it up though.

Is this a glitch in the 12.1 update? I am using a desktop dell, with Windows 7.

thank you.

I have reverted back to iTunes 12.0.1.26 and the playback improved but was not completely gone. The following suggestion by hhgttg27 seems to have resolved the problem for me:

Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using:" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).

I remember that while on 12.1 that the Direct Sound option wasn't there and based on the above quote it seems like I'm not the only one that observed this.

So this playback problem and iTunes crashing when accessing the internet via a proxy makes 12.1 a no go for me.
