Sudden loud static noise on bluetooth headset

I'm using LG Tone+ (HBS-730) bluetooth headset on my MacBook Air mid13 on OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.

Since a few days ago, while I was listening to music and such on my headset, sometimes, a loud static noise (max volume I think) started suddenly, which shocked me and led me to quickly pull the earpieces out. No other sound is recognizable since this static noise is so loud. The noise does not stop until the bluetooth is disconnected by either turning off the headset or the bluetooth module from mac. Turning the headset on again, it works again normal.

While the noise exists, if I mute the volume on mac, the static noise stops, but comes back when I increase the volume again. Volume control on the headset did not do anything.

I'm suspecting either the bluetooth module on the laptop or the bluetooth module in the headset is bad, but couldn't test with another headset as I don't have anything else. It happened 3 times for the past 3 days I have been using it.

MBA is a little bit over 1 year old and the headset is about 1.5 years old, no related problems were experienced in the past.

Does anyone have any clue or similar experience?

Yes! I am experiencing the exact same thing. Same headset (LG Tone+, HBS 730). I have a MacBook Pro, from mid-2010, running 10.10.2 Yosemite.

It only started in the last few days, though I've been running Yosemite for a little while now. I had previous bluetooth issues with Yosemite, specifically that the audio would get out of sync with whatever video I was watching. Upgrading to a later build of Yosemite seems to have fixed that, though.

The loud static sound is new, though. Based on the fact that the headset works fine in every other instance I use it (I have two phones that I use with it frequently), I'm fairly certain the issue is with Yosemite.

Hmm, that's the first I've heard of it being an issue when you haven't been playing any audio. Interesting.

For me, I experience it when watching Netflix videos (via Chrome). As far as I can tell, there is no solution currently. The good news, however, is that I was contacted by someone from the AppleCare Help Desk on Friday based on my first post in this thread. It seems that Apple's Engineering team is now aware of the issue described in this thread, and they were asking for more detail about what I have experienced. Hopefully a solution for this issue can be found quickly -- I'll certainly be watching the upcoming builds to see if they are able to resolve it.

One thing you guys may have noticed. Although this loud noise problem can happen any time and we can't prevent it yet, there's one situation I found that would almost guarantee triggering the issue. That is when the MacBook's display has been asleep and we wake it up by hitting the trackpad or keyboard. For myself, I used to set the display sleep time to 15 mins. And I usually use bluetooth headset listening to music during work. The machine goes to sleep mode pretty quickly (at least the display). And when I activated it, I got the loud noise (I even can expect it now, so I was pretty prepared). One thing we can do is to extend the sleep time to longer or never. That can lower the chance of the issue. But IT STILL HAPPENS. Other trigger I found is when you switch between applications. I'm sharing this not to fix the issue but at least we could mentally be prepared in some occasions and get less heart attacks.

I just found this thread after search for "apple sudden loud white noise". I just had this happen to me a few minutes ago and it was absolutely terrible. I have a headache from it and ear pain from it still. I am quite upset about it. I'm not touching bluetooth with my Macbook Pro until this is confirmed to be fixed. My Mac volume was only half way up, which was a comfortable listening level. I didn't have time to try any buttons or anything, I just pulled the headphones off as quickly as I could.

This is a major issue that could be causing hearing damage to people and this 10.10.2 patch should have never been released with such a critical defect. I'm about to schedule an appointment to get my hearing tested and ears checked out.

Encountering this issue as well using Bose SoundLink 2 bluetooth headsets.

I first thought it was an issue with another bluetooth device pinging in and out, as I would notice this would coincide with another Bluetooth connection (my mobile) turning off and on on OSX.

However, even with that device disabled on Bluetooth, I'm still receiving the static and can't find a consistent reason for it to start. I've seen it using web apps (Jamstash - a music streamer, and YouTube), so it's clearly not tied to a service or application more so than a system-level configuration.

I'm having similar problems since upgrading iTunes today, but I'm running on Windows 8.1 64-bit! No problems with bluetooth audio outside of iTunes. I've rebooted, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the bluetooth drivers. Problem persists.

You'll need to start a new discussion for your problem. This is purely an OS X issue with bluetooth and any audio source (not just iTunes).

Hope you find a fix for your problem.

Thanks, Stuartea71, but I posted here because I read multiple posts in this thread which stated that the OPers didn't know if the issue was iTunes or OS X related. I thought I'd post this here because I think my similar issue on Windows 8.1 after upgrading iTunes might indicate the locus of the problem is iTunes. Yes, I will post/follow in another thread from here. Good luck to you all.

From the start I have had the problem while I was not using iTunes, so I was aware it was probably a problem with the bluetooth driver/module. However, insights like that is worth mentioning to isolate problems for the users and Apple engineers. I would also recommend that you start another thread for more focused discussions if your problem is not related to MacBook or Yosemite.

Hi ,

Same problem for me using Bose Mini Soundlink Bluetooth speaker on MacBook white Late-2009 with Yosemite installed yesterday.

It's a problem of Yosemite.

If you want to make a demo of the problem you can make that :

Put a sound with your BT speaker (or headset ) connected

Launch the TERMINAL and purge the RAM ( command : sudo purge )

And hello Noise ;D (noise appear only on BT...)

Zz

Ps: no solution for the moment....

Same problem.

My configuration:

MacBook Pro 15" late 2010, Intel core i7, 2.66GHz, 8GB

Apple bluetooth keyboard

Magic Mouse

Yosemyte 10.10.2

Itunes 12.1.0.50

Bluetooth audio remote: Sony BM10

Bluetooth RSSI: -59db to -65db

Codec: aptX

What: loud "pink noise", no sound

When it happens: wake up after screen saver

Temporary solution: disconnect the BM10 remote device from menu, re-connect.

Note: the problem arose when I upgraded to Yosemite.

Happening to me, as well. I JUST upgraded to Yosemite Friday afternoon, and was greeted with this little problem right off the bat. With any audio, not just iTunes. Great introduction to Yosemite. 🙂

I have a Macbook pro 17" from 2009.

Yosemite (10.10.2 (14C109))

iTunes (12.1.0.50).

Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

bluetooth headphones (Inland ProHT 87091)

I was able to make it do it, as someone else said, when switching apps if the CPU got very busy, or in situations where, in the past, the audio would simply have paused or cut out briefly while the computer did something else intensive. For example, going from full-screen to normal on a YouTube video, or having Time Machine kick in while you're doing something else.

I'm glad it's not just me. I was seriously considering ditching Yosemite altogether and restoring from Time Machine back to Mavericks.
