Sudden loud static noise on bluetooth headset

I'm using LG Tone+ (HBS-730) bluetooth headset on my MacBook Air mid13 on OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.

Since a few days ago, while I was listening to music and such on my headset, sometimes, a loud static noise (max volume I think) started suddenly, which shocked me and led me to quickly pull the earpieces out. No other sound is recognizable since this static noise is so loud. The noise does not stop until the bluetooth is disconnected by either turning off the headset or the bluetooth module from mac. Turning the headset on again, it works again normal.

While the noise exists, if I mute the volume on mac, the static noise stops, but comes back when I increase the volume again. Volume control on the headset did not do anything.

I'm suspecting either the bluetooth module on the laptop or the bluetooth module in the headset is bad, but couldn't test with another headset as I don't have anything else. It happened 3 times for the past 3 days I have been using it.

MBA is a little bit over 1 year old and the headset is about 1.5 years old, no related problems were experienced in the past.

Does anyone have any clue or similar experience?

Yes! I am experiencing the exact same thing. Same headset (LG Tone+, HBS 730). I have a MacBook Pro, from mid-2010, running 10.10.2 Yosemite.

It only started in the last few days, though I've been running Yosemite for a little while now. I had previous bluetooth issues with Yosemite, specifically that the audio would get out of sync with whatever video I was watching. Upgrading to a later build of Yosemite seems to have fixed that, though.

The loud static sound is new, though. Based on the fact that the headset works fine in every other instance I use it (I have two phones that I use with it frequently), I'm fairly certain the issue is with Yosemite.

I reported the issue the other day and attached a couple of analysis files so they could see what was going on. A couple of days later, I got the following response. So they ARE aware of it. Whether there will be a forthcoming bugfix within a reasonable time frame is another issue altogether. 🙂

Engineering has determined that your bug report is a duplicate of another issue and will be closed.

Good news, So, fingers crossed for 10.10.3 then.

I'd rather wait for that than mess about in the terminal.

The fact that it has gone on, unfixed in a public release after months, and they have known about it, they really should be sued. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there is some kind of class action suit brought against them for it. We are talking about permanent damage to people's hearing. That's liability folks.

But hey, what's a few million dollar loss off the back of Apple's billions?

I'm downloading Mac OS X 10.10.3, I'm going to test to see if this resolves the issue.

In my computer, the issue happens when I hear Bluetooth music and I also hear the line-in (I have my DirecTV 3.5MM audio out hooked up to the line-in part of my computer).

Bluetooth audio works, but static noise happens when I try to hear the Audio-In while listening to Bluetooth.

I hope this fixes the problem.

It appears that Apple has fixed one problem but introduced another. I'm happy the static issue is gone, but now my headphones (HBS-730) are too loud, even at the lowest volume level! I used to have this problem with my phone until an update fixed it. Hopefully 10.10.4 doesn't take too long and will fix the overall loudness issue.

No problems here like that. Which volume are you adjusting? The headphones or the Macs? Check the Mac's volume isn't all the way up when using the headphones.

I'm having this as well, across all my Bluetooth devices and with or without iTunes running

MBA 2013, OSX 10.10.4, various bluetooth headsets, various audio apps. iTunes 12.2.1

Steps to reproduce for me: play music or sound to Bluetooth, then shut the lid and let it sleep, wake up and any attempt to play music again. This will result in ear bleeding static noise.

Seems to be a Yosemite bluetooth issue.
