how to get rid of MacBooster mini software?

hate it when this crappy mac software sneaks in... I wasn't paying attention when I installed VLC on a reformatted HD and got it from mac.software (top link in google and it looked just like the Videolan site)... thought everything was fine and then noticed strange behaviour ... did a bot of checking and found out this Macbooster app was piggy-backed with the VLC download! Why the **** this happens beats me, especially as I just can't seem to track it down anywhere ... Spotlight can't find it, going through all the preference folders can't find it... I know it's there as it pops up on Activity Monitor from time to time (see pic).

Any software that "cons" its way onto a mac is suspect and is not to be trusted IMO - any idea how to get rid of it... or even actually find where it's hiding?

Thomas_r, I could KISS you.

I long ago deleted the files mentioned earlier in this thread, but Macbooster mini was still appearing and disappearing in my activity monitor every few seconds. This post, and the one you made before it, were the info I needed to finally get this d@mn process off my iMac.

And here I was trying to figure out how to do a nuke and pave, because Finder wasn't showing results for searches that *should* have included the folders I just deleted. It has acted funny ever since I managed to get this malware on my machine, back in November. Here's to hoping that I shouldn't have to spend hours doing a fresh OSX install.)

Thank you!

Please forgive me but I am completely computer illiterate and I have tried everything that I could find on this forum and I am still having trouble removing macbooster or any other potentially problematic programs from my computer. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I had a message pop up after a power outage that MacBooster mini "Quit Unexpectedly". Being aware that more or less any "App" that claims to "Speed Up", "Boost", or "Clean" your Mac is at best junk if not malware or spyware, I followed the convenient filepath shown in the "Unexpectedly Quit" window and located it in the /Users/USER/Library/Application Support/MacBooster/XXX file and did a quick Get Info on it to determine it it was some obscure Apple file before I deleted it. It showed up as being created by "iObit". I took a screenshot of the "Unexpectedly Quit" window for future reference (below) and deleted it, then emptied the trash.

Next issue was to find any remaining bits. Since it was self opening at startup and running invisibly in the background, I had a look in /LibraryLaunchDaemons, /Library LaunchAgents, and /Library/StartupItems for MacBooster or iObit. I located an iObit file and deleted that, then checked the hidden (by Apple) User Library via the Finder/Go Menu with Option key held down/Library and checked the LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, and StartupItems there also. I found another iObit file lurking in there and deleted it. Finally I checked the ~User/Library/Preferences and deleted three more iObit preference files.

I suspect it came in via either a VLC auto-update as noted in the original enquiry, or via an Adobe Flash Player or Adobe Reader update, which I have found to have pre-checked junkware piggybacked on them also. DIVX is another serial offender in that regard. I deleted it and all of it's related crap off some time back and never missed it. This piggybacked junkware has been a common problem on PCs for years, and is increasingly becoming an issue on Macs.

If this "App" wasn't up to no good, it would be installed in Applications where it belongs, not hiding in the Application Support files.

I have also occasionally found malware hiding in the hidden /Private/VAR folder or the /Private/Etc. folder in a few of my client's computers. Some of my clients have fallen victim to a malware Popup that freezes a web browser, usually Safari or Firefox, with a 1-800 number to call to a supposed "Security Expert" purporting to be from Microsoft or an "Internet Security" outfit of some kind. The "Security Expert" then convinces the victim to download and install a version of LogMeIn that lets them take control of the computer, do some damage, and then demand a ransom payment to "remove the malware he found" and restore the function of the computer, leaving the LogMeIn behind for future use. Usually LogMeIn is installed in Applications, but the smarter criminals are starting to use an installer which installs it in a subfolder, usually VAR or Etc. of the hidden /Private folder. I use Marcel Bresink's free TinkerTool's Finder Options to Show Invisible Files to render them visible when tracking down this sort of malware. Thanks, Marcel.

I have to wonder where you're getting your apps and updates from. Adobe never, ever tags extra junk in with their Flash Player or Acrobat Reader downloads or updates. If VLC is obtained directly from their site, it is also always free of garbage, as are the auto updates. Downloaded from the videolan.org web site, the VLC app doesn't even include an installer. You open the .dmg file and then drag and drop the app into the Applications folder.

I can only guess you're using aggregate sites like C|NET's www.downloads.com, or www.softonic.com. You're pretty much guaranteed to get unwanted extras from them.

For those coming across this that can't seem to kill the process MacBooster mini in Activity Monitor, here's what I did. This is my first time posting on the forums I believe but I was pretty excited to find this, so here goes.

I opened up Terminal and typed "launchctl list" which lists all the processes that launch automatically, i think.

I scrolled through and found one for MacBooster-mini. It was named "com.iobit.MacBooster-mini" This didn't come up anywhere in Spotlight or when searching in the Library Application Support folders, nothing that was mentioned in this thread found any mention of iobit on my system, other than seeing it in Activity Monitor. If I double clicked it in that list and looked at the info it would show it in a folder, but that folder didn't exist and where it should have been, it wasn't.

I also ran this in Terminal, "launchctl list |grep iobit" to find any other mention of iobit, and there was none.

I typed "launchctl remove com.iobit.MacBooster-mini" and then it terminated that Process,

At some point I had used "Go To Folder" and typed "/Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/MacBooster" and actually got that to open up, but if I looked in Application Support, MacBooster folder was not there.

So then I dropped the MacBooster program icon from there into App Cleaner, it found a few files, I dumped them adn deleted the Trash before I could reference them for this post. Sorry, but not really.

So now the plist file is in the trash but I can't empty that out because it's still in use. Trying to work that last part out but at least the app is gone and so is the process. edit: Finder/Secure Empty Trash did the trick

how to get rid of MacBooster mini software?
