hardware test error 4MEM/62/40000000: 0x83d18e98

Hi all,

I ran a Hardware Test, and it came up with this error: 4MEM/62/40000000: 0x83d18e98

What is it, and what can I do about it?

Using a MacBook Pro (2011) with Mavericks

Thanks,

Ben

Longer Story: I did the Hardware Test in the first place because I had trouble with a external apple Keyboard and a external Hard Drive. Both weren't recognized, and of course still aren't. Found some posts about similar error codes, they seemed to be mostly about RAM. Can that cause problems with USB connected devices?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), Netgear WGR614, wireless internet

That error code indicates that there is a problem with the RAM. Open the MBP and take out the two RAM modules, clean the contacts and reinstall them. Make certain that they are firmly seated. Check if both are recognized and see if the AHT will come back with no errors.

If the error reoccurs, Download from Kelley Computing Rember:

Run it overnight so that sufficient loops are executed.

Possibly. Once you get the RAM sorted out, then you should know.

Ciao.

Okay, did the NVRAM reset, tried both USB ports and different cables. All works fine with different devices, but neither the HDD nor the Keyboard show up.

I recently had another HDD problem. My backup disk is hooked up via a hub to the mac, together with two other HDDs. The two other still work, but backup doesn't. I figured it just somehow broke, but now, with these new problems, that seems weird, too. Any chance that my computer could have trashed those HDDs, or even a keyboard?

Thanks,

Ben

Okay, I took all the stuff in its ragged glory to work and had the system administrator have a look at it. He found out the HDD was fried, and the (brand new) keyboard didn't work either. His verdict: probably something wrong with the USB-Hub I've been using.

So I'm replacing it and eveything else that got killed alongside. And then hopefully all will be well.

Thanks for helping out!

I'd be careful about blaming the RAM. Right now, I'm penning this on a MacBook Pro that will get very hot, even when under low disk/processor load, and then either lock up, or not wake up when the lid is closed. If I force a restart, sometimes it will work well, other times, give the three beeps indicative of a RAM problem.

I have extra RAM, and so have been able to test with both sets (and have swapped them out numerous times), but the same issues still occur. Also have done NVRAM and SMC resets numerous times, as well as run Apple diagnostics, which usually checks out.

Basically, I think what I'm experiencing is similar to others here--it may be tied to RAM sockets, or the logic board itself. Basically, it may be good to have a professional look at it to rule out other issues.
