Problems with ATI Radeon HD 5770 In Yosemite and Pro Tools 11

Hi Everyone. I having a problem here with my video card. I have a mac pro quad core Mid 2010 with 16gb of ram using two displays which have the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card. I have notice every since the update to mavericks the video card was not happy. Now I updated to Yosemite and it's still the same problems. Video playback is not working well. Scrolling in finders and online websites are very very jittery. And random lines appear on the screen (Major issue). And also I use pro tools 11. When i apply plugins in the software then scroll around. My meters and display needle gets real sluggish to the point I think everything going to shut down. But soon as I downgrade back to Mountain Lion, Everything works fine. See me I don't have lots of money to just upgrade all the time. I paid lots of money for my mac pro and they told me at the apple store that this mac will last me 10 years. So I took their word for it. With a wife and 4 kids, money don't fall of trees over here. So Long story short. APPLE PLEASE HELP US MAC PRO USERS WITH ATI RADEON HD CARDS CONTINUE USING THEM PROPERLY CAUSE FOR SOME USERS LIKE ME THEY WORK JUST FINE. PLEASE MAKE A UPDATE SOON TO SOLVE THESE ISSUES CAUSE I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THESE PROBLEMS. Thanks Apple. ROSEWOOD

Yep, it's over two years later since the OP, but I'm adding in since I have had the same issues and the same basic setup and software as the OP, only with my Mac Pro 4,1 Quad Core and the stock Nvidia GT120 video card.

Pro Tools 11.3.2, OS X 10.10.5, one single monitor connected via DVI, and I MUST run Quartz Debug and disable Beam Sync to suppress SOME of the glitchy graphics. I still cannot successfully automate faders in the Pro Tools edit screen by clicking and dragging in real time without some glitching.

Like the OP, and many other users, I am stuck. No money to upgrade machines at the moment, and really I have no need to for my purposes, except for the glitchy graphics using one essential program.

In all, this just *****.

I guess I'll try the SMC reset thing, but I have a feeling it'll be a waste of time.

Have you tried running the system with only one monitor hooked up? I have a 2010 Mac Pro (24GB RAM) with the same card that works OK with Yosemite so far. But I only have one monitor attached.

In the meantime, if everything works with Mountain Lion, you can keep using that. I'm not using Mavericks, let alone Yosemite, for anything critical.

Ok Guy here is the deal. I did everything in the book. I even updated to Yosemite just to show the guys at the apple store whats going on today. they seen what I was talking about and was puzzled. 1 guy said somebody came up there last week with same mac with same issue. One of the genius stopped me before I left and told me to bring my make to the bar. He hooked it up to a ethernet cable and a screen popped up I never seen before on my make. He was running type of tests even an hardware test. Everything showed up great all working fine. So I don't know what to say. My mac is hooked up to a power conditioner to keep all my studio gear running great. Its like insurance to my gear. So like I said I really think its something with Yosemite.

And random lines appear on the screen (Major issue).

that is likely to be a sample defect of your particular graphics card. You should get a replacement card. You can run both 5770 cards at once and compare them.

My meters and display needle gets real sluggish to the point I think everything going to shut down.

There have been big additions to what Spotlight searches for, even in the background. You need to turn off the last few items for your Mac to be as responsive as it was under Mavericks:

Nobody wants to tell you to your face that this is likely to be a self-inflicted problem. You have probably added third-party stuff that is slowing down your Mac, like so-called Anti-Virus software or add-on programs that make changes to Mac OS X and slow it down.

Things you can do on your own are to run Activity Monitor, and look at the CPU display to see where your processing power is going, and whether it is actually all used up or there is still some idle time. Look at Activity Monitor Memory Pressure display and see if the graph is still all green, indicating no memory shortages.

If you want to talk about this some more, download and run this little free Utility called Etrecheck, which will list some things that might be slowing down your Mac.

Then post the report back here for analysis.
